An Unmaterialistic Home is a Content Home

When my youngest child, Cassi, was only three months old, we moved from north of Los Angeles in the high desert to San Diego. When we were looking for a home in San Diego, the market was very hot. We had made a great profit in one year in our old home so we knew we could put a good down payment towards a new one.

Every time a home went on the market, by the time we got there, it had been sold except for one that had had a fire in it. It was pretty bad. We were kind of giving up hope when we found a brand new tract of homes. It so happened that one home had just fallen through so we bought it!

We packed up all of our stuff and children and drove to San Diego to move into our brand new home. I remember writing the first mortgage payment and thinking, "Wow, this is a lot of money!" Everyone in our neighborhood had just moved in and were all busy decorating their homes with professional decorators. I wanted a gorgeous, decorated home. I couldn't put all of my old furniture in this brand new home!

I begged Ken to give me a monthly allowance that I could spend decorating our home. He did but he sure wasn't too happy about me spending so much money on our home. Around that time, my mother-in-law had given me a book by Dr. Richard Swenson called Margin. I put it in a bookshelf.

After several years of running myself ragged trying to decorate my home, take care of four young children, attend a Bible study, cooking and cleaning on top of Ken being gone half of the year, I got very sick. God had slowed me down. I had time to read the book and it convicted me!

We must have some room to breathe. We need freedom to think and permission to heal. Our relationships are being starved to death by velocity. No one has the time to listen, let alone love. Our children lay wounded on the ground, run over by our high-speed good intentions. Is God now proexhaustion? Doesn't He lead people beside the still waters anymore?

Much of this pain is in our relational life: to self, to others, to God. We miss margin in many areas. But we require it in our relationships. We need to get it back...Why, in such a prosperous age, is it necessary to sedate so many?

True, we get to places faster, but we have more places to go. A net loss. We have devices to help us clean, but we have more things stuffed into more square footage to clean. A net loss. Hasn't the light bulb given us more time because now we can plan activities during the evening that were previously limited to daylight hours? Yes. The light bulb has given us more capacity to be busy, to produce, and to fill up schedules in the evening when before all we could do was sit around the table and read or sit by the fire and read or sit with family and friends and visit until it was time for all to go to bed. A net loss.

Economics will solve some of our suffering, but nothing more. And solving our suffering is not the goal of the Christian life; walking in righteousness is...Our true needs are few and basic: We need God, love, relationships with fellow human beings, meaningful work, food, clothing, and shelter.... Christ came to save me from sin, not from sixty-degree homes, rainy weather and delayed dinners.

This book got me moving on a completely different path. I no longer needed to keep up with the Jones'. I read Tightwad Gazette and any book I could get my hands on in order to live more simply and be more content. Plus, dealing with so many health problems has helped me to hold on loosely to the things of this earth, since they are all going to burn one day, and to grasp on tightly to Jesus and His beautiful ways.  Joni Eareckson Tada is a quadriplegic and lives in constant pain, yet she believes, "It was no longer a matter of being content with His plan for my life; it was a matter of finding Him utterly and supremely the source of ALL contentment. This, to my delight, would give Him the greatest glory."

But godliness with contentment is great gain.
For we brought nothing into this world,
and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
I Timothy 6:6, 7

Are You Reaping Beautiful or Rotten Fruit?

Lot should be an example to us of how we should NOT live our lives! First of all, when Abraham gave him a chance to choose what land he wanted for his own, he chose the best land for himself . He was selfish, not generous as God commands us to be. He did not think more highly of others than himself.

When the two men who were angels went to warn Lot of the coming doom for Sodom and Gomorrah, he committed multiple errors. When all the men of the city were pounding at Lot's door to let them have sex with the two visiting men, Lot offered his two virgin daughters to them instead and even told them to "do as you please with them!" Can you imagine? His daughters were virgins who were engaged to be married so he must have taught them to not be sexually immoral even while living in a very immoral place but he didn't value their virginity or their lives much if he'd just turn them over to the immoral men outside of his home.

When the men would not stop pounding on Lot's door came close to breaking the door down, the angels struck the men with blindness, yet the men still "wearied themselves to find the door." These were disgusting men!  Lot had gone to his daughter's sons-in-law to warn them of the coming destruction but they thought he was only joking. There was NO fear of the Lord in this city.

The next morning, the two angels urged Lot to hurry the but Lot "lingered." He didn't immediately obey. He may have even been contemplating NOT obeying and staying. But the Lord was "merciful to him" and the angels took him out and left him there.

The angels told him to escape for his life and flee to the mountains but Lot didn't want to go to the mountains. He still refused to obey the Lord. He thought that if he fled to the mountains the evil would overtake him and he would die. He doubted God's direction and protection. Later on, Lot's daughters got him drunk and had sex with him.

Just before all of this took place, God spoke concerning Abraham, "I have known him, so that he may teach and command his children and the sons of his house after him to keep the way of the Lord and to do what is just and righteous, so the Lord may bring Abraham what he has promised" {Genesis 18:19}. When God commanded Abraham to do something, he did it immediately. When God told him to circumcise all the men, he did it immediately. When he was told to kill his only son, he went to do it immediately. "And Abraham believed in the Lord and He counted to Him as righteousness" {Genesis 15:6}.

One man followed the Lord and obeyed immediately. The other man didn't follow the Lord and His ways and he didn't obey immediately. We see the fruit of each man's life. Lot's city was destroyed, his wife killed, and his daughters were sexually immoral producing godless offspring. Abraham has a city without foundations, more godly offspring than the sand of the seashore, and accomplished great things for the Lord.

Do you follow God's ways and obey Him immediately or do you enjoy mingling with the world, doing things your own way and maybe obeying Him when you feel like it? Do you teach your children to obey you immediately or do you tell them to do something and then count to ten hoping they will obey? The choice is yours. Will you walk in complete obedience to God and His ways and reap beautiful fruit or will you walk in partial or no obedience to God and reap rotten fruit?

God's Ability to Transform His Life

Some of you are married to an unbeliever or disobedient husband. Life is difficult for you. You would love to leave him and find happiness with someone else but if you leave him, Jesus leaves him. Then what? He is left to his own destruction.

When you stay with him, Jesus stays with him and lives in his home since Jesus is living inside of you. Do you have a vision of eternity? Do you want that man that you vowed to love all of the days of your life through good times and bad times, through sickness and health, through poverty and wealth to go to heaven? His best chance of living eternally with Jesus is for you to live with him and love him.

Yes, it's hard but Jesus lives inside of you and will give you strength. He will never ask you to do something you are incapable of doing. He wants believing spouses to stay with unbelieving or disobedient spouses so they will be sanctified. You sanctify your husband by living with him.

When you have eternity in view, it makes sense to stay with him. He becomes your mission field and you win him without a word by your godly behavior. Your behavior will speak much louder to him than any words will. He will be drawn to your patience, kindness, love, and grace when he knows he doesn't deserve you. This is a very good thing, women.

I know some women who have given up on their sick, poor or not so good husband and it causes my heart to ache for both of them. This is not God's will. Jesus has left their husband's home and the wives are being disobedient to God. No one wins in this situation. No one, except maybe the enemy of our soul. If God has the ability to create a beautiful sunset like the one above, he has the ability to transform your husband's life.

TheJoyFilledWife wrote this on Where's the Lovemaking Gone?

The beauty of a life lived in Christ is that, by surrendering your will in exchange for His will for your life, He is able to heal even the most wounded hearts and purify those who have been caught in destruction of sin. Because God has brought such a turn around in my own marriage, I have faith that He can change even the most devastated of marriages. I hope and pray that none of you ladies who are experiencing tragedy or betrayal will choose to give up on your husbands and God's ability to transform their lives. My husband's former addiction impacted our marriage in ways he never realized until after he came out of it, but the restoration and healing that has come about through Christ is the only answer for such a drastic change. God is able to do so much more than we could ever imagine! We must never lose faith.

Pornography steals so much from a marriage and in ways we don't always initially see. With the sin removed from my husband's life, we saw 3,000% increase in our intimate times {prompted by him} as a husband and wife! Before I couldn't convince him to give me a second glance for anything and now I can't keep him away {not that I want to}. We need to pray faithfully and be patient with God's timing of deliverance. It doesn't happen overnight.

God is a God of miracles and, as our husband's help meet, we must never lose hope that God can heal our marriages. He is capable of turning them into something more amazing than we ever could have asked for. Let's be always praying for our men and the purity of their hearts and devotion to the Lord. There are many who are going through or have gone through just what you're facing right now. Know that God will carry you through it and lean on His strength at every turn and through every tear.

The LORD is near to the brokenhearted
And saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Serve the Lord with Gladness!

Do you serve the Lord with gladness? Would your children describe you as a joyful mother? Would your husband say you are a happy wife? What about your friends, neighbors, and those you meet in the grocery store? Are you causing others to think that being a Christian is the MOST wonderful thing in the world?

When you wake up, sing out loud, "This is the day, this is the day that the Lord hath made, that the Lord hath made. Let us rejoice, let us rejoice and be glad in it, and be glad in it!" In this way, you are mentally reminding yourself of what your behavior should look like. I have this verse written next to my prayer list so I read it every day, "so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God" {Colossians 1:10}. We must renew our minds daily of God's goodness and our purpose in this life.

When you make your bed, thank the Lord for giving you such a comfortable bed. When you take a shower or bath, thank the Lord for hot water. Before every meal, thank the Lord for His provision of you. Begin thanking Him throughout your day and you will be unable to have a sour, unhappy mood.

When your day is unexpectedly interrupted with different plans, believe that these are God's interruptions in your life and use them for His glory. When you are stuck in traffic, He may be saving you from a horrible accident. When your plane is delayed for hours, He is still in control so trust Him. When your child comes down with the flu and you are up all night, remind yourself that when you are rocking and serving your sick child, you are serving the Lord.

When you wake up weary from not getting enough sleep, rely on the Lord's strength to get you through the day. I have had MANY sleepless nights and the Lord always gets me through. The next night, I usually sleep nine wonderful hours! He restores the years the locusts have eaten.

When you are injured or ill, use these times to rest in Him knowing that he has you in the palm of His hand. Use this time to grow in the wisdom and knowledge of Him, to pray for all those who need prayer and show your family that you can be sick, tired or injured and still remain pleasant because you can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens you!

Serve the LORD with gladness;
Come before Him with joyful singing.
Psalm 100:2
