Hand and Body Lotion Recipe

This is an incredible hand and body lotion recipe.  Friends have asked me to give it to them for gifts! It makes your skin incredibly soft and smooth; better than any other lotion I have ever tried!  I order my supplies at  Brambleberry or you can find them on ebay, maybe even Amazon. There is an initial investment but one order has lasted me many years.

Ingredients ~

1/4 teaspoon or 1.2 grams citric acid
1 Tablespoon or 15 grams liquid glycerin
1 Tablespoon or 15 grams stearic acid
5 teaspoons or 25 grams ewax
6 Tablespoons or 90 grams sunflower oil or avocado oil
1 cup or 237 grams water
2 teaspoons or 10 grams shea butter
1 teaspoon or 5 grams germaben II
1 teaspoon or 5 grams liquid silk (optional)
Essential oil to scent (Brambleberry has incredible ones or leave it out if you don't want it to smell.)

Makes 16 ounces of lotion.

Directions ~

In a small sauce pan combine citric acid, liquid glycerin, stearic acid, e-wax, sunflower oil, shea butter, and water. Heat all this until the e-wax has melted. Remove from the heat and stir. Keep stirring until it looks milky which doesn't take too long.

Let the lotion mixture cool down until it reaches 110 degrees, stirring occasionally.

At that point, add the germaben II, liquid silk and fragrance oil.  Stir well.

Pour lotion into clean bottles or containers and let it cool completely. Give the bottles a good shake every few hours afterwards. Sometimes you will notice the water separating from the lotion but a few shakes will take care of that problem. The next day, the lotion should be nice and thick. If it turns out to be watery, it is still very usable and moisturizing.

If you want a face and body lotion that is completely chemical free, inexpensive, and made with coconut oil, aloe vera, and herbs go HERE. I made it once for my sister and now this is the only thing she wants for her birthday. It has no preservatives in it at all and lasts a long, long time. It has never gone bad on me! (However, I like this one a lot more since it is not greasy feeling at all.)

Yes, this does take some work but it is well worth it and it's expensive initially but the supplies last for years!

This recipe sounds so nice, I will be making it this weekend to try it out. Thanks, my poor hands are shedding skin like a snake, this weird weather has dried out my hands and feet something terrible. I am hoping that this recipe will help the problem

My hands were that way. There is something around you that is causing the allergy. My dermatologist said it was Dermatitis. I used to live in a tropical weather and moved to Texas which is dry. My hands problems were cured! Well for a couple of years until I developed allergy for something else. The only cream that will control my hands allergy is Cethaphil (which you can buy over the counter). But the reason I decided to reply to your post was to tell you that since I started to use Natural or Handmade soap I haven't use my Cetaphil since. Hope this helps! :)
Thanks for the shout out! This is a great recipe and I bet the sunflower oil that you used in this recipe makes your skin feel so moisturized!
Can you estimate how much it costs to make a 16 oz. container of lotion?

I can't Luebby because it depends on where you buy your ingredients and how much they cost. I bought mine years ago so they last a long time. Also the lotion is very rich so you only need a little bit. It also lasts a long time!
Lori, I would like to make this, but right now I am trying to decide what essential oil company to become an affiliate with. Once I know that I can do it. Thanks for the inspiration and thanks for stopping by to visit me at Deep Roots :]
Can you tell us what the citric acid and the stearic acid do for the lotion? I've never used them in homemade lotion before and I'm curious what effect they will have.

No, I don't know but I just know it is great lotion.
Hi Liz, Stearic Acid will set all the ingredients, making the final product to look like a gel. Also it is used in soap industry (depending on how much it is used will set the product).Stearic acid is made by treating animal fat with water at a high temperature and pressure. It can also be obtained from the hydrogenation of some unsaturated vegetable oils, usually coconut oil. And the third type is just just chemical. Also the term 'stearic' is derived from the Greek word 'stéar', which means 'tallow'. So if you want a 100% natural stearic acid look for the vegetable oils based one.
On the other hand citric acid is a natural preservative, offering to the beauty product a longer shelf life. Hope it helps, Cheers-Kate
Printing this out and bookmarking, too. I'm going to go check out the site to order the ingredients!

THANK YOU!
Have you tried it with anything over than shea butter? I'd really like to try this, but, I hate using shea butter, it usually ends up being grainy.

I am not sure. I have never had a problem with shea butter being grainy. In this recipe, it has always been smooth. Sorry I can't help you.
I made this lotion yesterday. The only change I made was using mango butter instead of shea butter. Very nice lotion, it's thin, but absorbs well & leaves your skin soft & smelling wonderful. I never smelled pulmeria before. It's nice, sweet. Thank you for sharing the recipe.

I cut down how much water you use in the recipe so it won't be so thin.
