I use to not believe in this. I thought it was a figment of Hollywood's imagination. I believed any two believers who got married could make it work if they followed God's plan for marriage regardless of chemistry or shared interests. They can, but it may not have been God's best for them. Once they get married, however, it is God's best for them.
I am starting to believe in "soul mates" after observing Alyssa with Jon and Ryan with Erin's dating, engagement, and marriage. I figure if God can save our souls, He can pick out the perfect soul mate for us if we ask Him.
Two people can sound perfect for each other...love Jesus, come from the same background, enjoy doing the same things, etc. but then they meet and there isn't the chemistry. I believe chemistry is a way God can lead us to the right person. Or their relationship is very complicated. They argue a lot and don't enjoy each other much. This doesn't seem like soul mates to me, either.
If you are seeking Him and asking Him for a spouse, I believe He is faithful and will lead you to that spouse and chemistry is a big part of the way He does that. It seems, from watching my two married children, when it is from God, it's not that difficult. It's easy really...They meet, are attracted to each other, fall in love, and get married. There is very little or no arguing and no big disagreements. They just love, respect each other and enjoy being together more than with anyone else.
Of course, they have all been taught how to do it right but that is the parent's job...to teach their children God's ways. I'm not saying everything is perfect because nothing on this earth is perfect but doing things God's way, seeking His will for your life, sure makes life a lot simpler!
If you are already married and are not happily married, however, you cannot use the excuse that you need to get divorced and find your soul mate. God works behind us to clean up our messes when we make them and wants you to work on changing yourself and hopefully, change your marriage.
So....Did you marry your soul mate? I did but it took over 20 years to figure it out...
Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
Matthew 19:6
