Powdered Vs. Liquid Laundry Detergent

We have been using the powdered detergent for the past year and I have decided I don't like it.  I always have to wash my clothes in warm or hot water or else the detergent doesn't dissolve.  I am going back to the liquid version.

It only costs pennies per load and it washes the clothes very clean.  When heating the soap and other ingredients together while making it, the key is to make sure everything is completely dissolved or you won't be able to wash your clothes in cold water.  Cold water just doesn't dissolve it well enough.

Here is my recipe for liquid laundry detergent.  It is so easy to make and doesn't leave a scent on your clothes which I don't like.  Scents are just another chemical that your body doesn't need to have to deal with.

In the summer time, I dry my clothes in our backyard.  It is usually windy from the ocean breezes and sunny since we face the west.  The sunshine is a great sanitizer and bleaches clothes naturally.

We also have a large wooden drying rack.  I keep it in a bedroom with a western exposure so it is warm and sunny.  This makes perfect conditions for drying clothes quickly.  I love these wooden drying racks made by the Amish because they are very well made and last a long, long time.  They are more expensive but you will definitely get your money's worth.  You usually get what you pay for!  Here is an informative post on how to care for your drying racks.

Thanks for all your insight! I have enjoyed your posts and have passed them on the others to enjoy also! I also make my own liquid laundry detergent. I love that it's sooooo cheap to make and I know I'm not using harsh chemicals. I love the smell of line dried laundry! But here in PA, it's too cold for me in the winter, so I too have a huge wooden drying rack that is in my bedroom. Keep writing!

You're welcome, Gina. I love the fact that it isn't full of chemicals either!
Hi Lori,
Do you know if this soap works in high efficiency (he) washing machines? Thanks for all of your helpful tips!

I have heard it is great for high efficiency washing machines. You will just have to experiment with how much works best.

I got a similar drying rack at Walmart for around $20 or $30.
I love that you make your own detergent. I've always wanted to but I am confused about borax. I have read that it's toxic and read that it's o.k. to use. No one can seem to agree!

My Costco detergent doesn't dissolve well in cold water either, so I just run the warm water for about a minute or two and that seems to do the trick o.k.

I have two drying racks. I would love to dry my clothes outside but I read that allergy suffers shouldn't do that because the pollen can attach itself to the clothes and I am allergic to pollen. However, what's the difference between me drying my clothes outside and WEARING my clothes outside? I suppose it depends on how long I'm outside, lol!

Thanks so much for linking up to "Making Your Home Sing Monday" today! :)
Love this doesn't leave another unneeded chemical on our clothes. Thanks so much for sharing.
Great tips! =)
