Long Hair and Wearing Dresses

The Bible states that women should have long hair.  "But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering" (I Corinthians 11:15). Long hair is a woman's glory. It distinguishes us from being men. In our culture, we need this distinction more than ever before!

Most men do love long hair.  If your husband loves your hair long, women, then wear it long.  Some women have very thin hair, and it won't grow long even if they want it to.  Some men may prefer their wives in short hair. If he does, then wear it short but in a feminine style. We are commanded to obey our husbands in everything unless it's a sin against God. God also wants us to learn what pleases our husbands.

Many women are convicted to just wear dresses. The verse I use to decide how women should dress is I Timothy 2:9, "In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array."

I take modest to mean two things.  We should not dress to show off our bodies or cause men to stumble.  There are no set standards for this so you should ask your husband what he thinks is modest. He knows how men think. I just know that the more flesh you reveal, the harder it is for men not to lust. I do believe that most men prefer women in dresses since they are feminine and can be very modest. For most of American history, women wore dresses. Pants came in style with the feminist movement.

Modest also means not expensive.  We shouldn't spend a lot of money on our clothes.  It doesn't mean you shouldn't buy quality clothes, just not a ton of them.  We don't need nearly as many clothes as we have.  I think the Lord would much rather we spend money on others than have stuffed closets full of clothes.

God wants us to be women who honor him in whatever we do.  You honor Him with your hair when you please your husband and obey him.  You honor Him in your dress when you dress modestly and not showy.

Here is a post that I wrote on How is Biblical Modesty Defined Today?

How funny! I just asked my husband last night if he could dress me in any style of clothes and give me any haircut, what would he choose? He said he was missing my short (pixie cut) hair lately. I've been growing it out for a year.
I used to get various haircuts and I'd always ask my husband "Do you like it?" and he'd say "you know what I like, I like it long." When he met me it was fairly long. One day I realized, "Why don't I just grow it long again?" I think we women crave compliments from our girlfriends. And friends are more likely to comment on our look if it has changed in someway. People don't compliment you when you look the same day after day after day. But get some color in your hair and twenty people will say something about it even if your natural color was really nice. I've learned that the lack of compliments from friends doesn't mean that I look bad. It just means that I look the same. And that the only compliment that should really matter to me is my husband's and my own opinion. I went through a period of time where I only wore skirts, more as an exercise in femininity. My husband doesn't care either way about that sort of thing.

Skirts and long hair were a new biblical concept to me when I started to grow in my faith and listen to some new preachers and research into my Bible more. I became convicted about wearing skirts/dresses from Deuteronomy 22:5 RE: a woman putting on a man's garment. I could not interpret that verse any other way than via pants versus skirts/dresses and to err on the side of caution, I only wear skirts and dresses now. That was 4 years ago. It was NOT an easy change(this could go into the category of non-submission but the story would be too long, LOL). I slowly started to wear them the majority of the week and then I had a baby and decided it was time to make the change even though I really didn't want to. I had the baby (and two others now too!) and have been wearing them since. It is so much easier now and I enjoy wearing them.

My husband has always liked my hair long so that has been easy, especially as I've found lots of cute ways to pull it back out of my face from sites like pinterest.

I am sharing this just because that is what the topic is about- I don't mean to cause controversy, just to share a personal testimony.

Thanks for all you do Lori and still praying for your health.

I love the Duggars. My husband and I have been watching the seasons on Netflix and feel like they are such a neat family. I actually do prefer to wear skirts rather than jeans a lot of the time. Not so much in Winter, but I wore maxi skirts all Summer. My husband loves my hair shoulder length or longer, so I usually fluctuate with it in those lengths, add layers, etc. I think he's happy when I feel happy and confident. :)
I am a skirt and dress girl, have been almost all my life and feel completely strange if I do wear trousers. I love wearing of skirts/dresses and feel very feminine. No one ever comments and in fact I did wear pants I would get comments. To me it is important and is part of not "wearing men's garments". My husband likes the way I dress but not overly keen on the long skirts that he called (tents!) so I wear straight skirts mostly ranging in length from knee to ankle depending on the weather. I also like to have my hair shoulder length, once again to look feminine and womanly. My husband isn't really fussed.

I know this isn´t exactly on topic, but I went to the movies recently and saw 12 years a slave. I wonder what you think of the bibles words on slavery and how they fit into our modern life?

Of course, if your husband is still in the future, asking your DADDY <3 is a great place to start! :D If we don’t learn to submit to them and our mother’s authority while we are still under their roof, it won’t be as natural when we are married and commanded to submit to our husbands :D
It wasn't that long ago that long hair was a sign of rebellion. Don't you remember hippies? That one Duggar girl looks straight out of the 60s! It's funny how the values of middle america change.

I have begun to wear skirts just recently, and am encouraged to see other women embracing their God-given femininity, too!

I'm always amazed at the gracious speech that the Duggar's use. Wouldn't it be awful if they swore and dressed the way that they do?
Some how the two would not go together at all, would they?
Okay I'm a christian I'm a female and I love sports Hockey and Basket ball, I love wearing pants and Boxers and i will refuse to wear a dress i have even augured with my mom about not wearing one.when i was a kid My hair is short it is a short wavy. cut If my husband told me he wanted me to put on a dress and grow out my hair we wouldn't be married I am who i am and he excepts that. just like i except him. he wouldn't change me into someone I'm not just like i wouldn't change my daughter from wearing jeans and super hero t-shirts. she loves the colors purple,Yellow, blue and orange. i let her wear what ever she has older brothers and a twin brother she is not hockey as well and loves it she is very good. In my Opinion you dont have to wear a dress to look nice i wear a lot of feminine jackets and jeans my daughter does as well. as for my husband and boys try putting them in ties its like world war three i just let my kids be who they are and who god created them to be they love the Lord and are great kids. My daughter is a tomboy and i dont care if she wars boy clothes she likes her hair in a braid or braided pig tails with a hat on backwards she is a loving kind child who would rather be outside than inside playing she does love her build a bear but that's her and if she wanted to cut her hair short i wouldn't care she said she is a girl and she is special to have three brothers who love her. she can even take them down. it is actually funny
I'm also a christian I'm and adult tomboy i'm married to my husband and i have three boys and a girl like me she is a tomboy she loves to wear her brothers clothes and wont wear dresses she loves hockey and sports just like me. i would never allow my husband to tell me how to dress just like i wouldn't tell him. he hates suits and ties just like my sons do trying to put them in yucky suits is world war three my daughter wrestles with her brothers and father she can take them too. My daughter is a girl she does like painting her nails. she will wear certain girl clothes. but likes boxers and blue jeans just like me she said girls under wear ride her butt they do that's why i have opted to wear boxers when i was ten. she is nine and is into sports she loves purple, orange, blue and yellow. you dont have to have long hair and wear dresses to be feminine that's just ridiculous I'm proud of who i am and I'm proud of my daughter. we are tomboys and proud of it
WOW!!!! I stumbled across your blog and LOVE it!! Thank you so much for taking the time to share with us all that you are learning :D I especially found this entry to just brighten my spirit. I was raised Catholic however my mom's family were Mennonites. They do not cut their hair at all and live strictly by the verses in the Bible. I have always tried to grow my hair long...making it to just above my waist at one point however as my hair is very think I would constantly get headaches....so I would cut it but then feel so guilty having done so. It got to the point where I figured God couldn't be very nice to make us do something knowing it cause such pain...I have struggled with my walk with God. Never letting go but due to all the "teachings" I have received I find I am so very confused and do not know who God truly is. I have also just got divorced from a man who did not know the Lord at all and abused me terribly for 10 years. Healing from this has been ever so painful. So when I tell you that this entry brightened my spirit please know that it did because I read this (and have since discovered more entries I am eager to read) that weight that I had placed on my shoulders was immediately lifted. I am not going to hell having short hair!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that is incredible!!!! I pray you have a very blessed day!! :D :D :D
