The Problem with Children's Bible Stories

Many parents read Bible Stories to their children that are written by men. Children learn Bible stories in Sunday School from curriculum written by men. We should be reading the Bible, the Word of God, just as it is to our children since it does not come back void. So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it {Isaiah 55:11}.  It is the only thing that has the power to transform lives. It is living and active and sharper than a two-edged sword. For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart {Hebrews 4:12}

Paul began 2 Timothy praising Timothy's grandmother and mother for passing on their faith  to Timothy when he was a child. "When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also" {2 Timothy 1:5}. Later on in the book, Paul wrote this to him, "And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ JesusAll scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works" {2 Timothy 3:15-17}.

Timothy's mother and grandmother didn't teach him Bible stories that were written by men. No, they taught him the Word to him from childhood and so should we with our children. Nothing man writes can compare to the pure Word of God. Nothing transforms like the pure Word of God. Nothing convicts, challenges, reproves or corrects like the pure Word of God. Nothing else can make children "wise unto salvation through faith...in Christ Jesus." Nothing can take the Bible's place.

When my children were young, I drove them to AWANA every week while they were growing up. AWANA is a great program that teaches and motivates children to memorize the Word of God. My last two children started when they were only three years old and they all went through junior high. They memorized a ton of Scripture. AWANA used the KJV which is easy to memorize because of the way it is worded. I love the KJV but if you want to use another version, use it but make sure your children are hearing and memorizing the pure Word of God since nothing can compare to it.

Finally, they must know the Word of God so they will be holding fast the faithful word as {they} hath been taught, that {they} may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers {Titus 1:9}.There will be many who will oppose what your children say if they speak Truth. There is a lack of Bible knowledge among people today but if they know the Word of God from childhood, they will be able to speak Truth into the lives of those who don't know it or oppose them. This, my friends, is the most important gift you can give your children for there is NO greater joy than to hear your children walk in Truth {3 John 4}.

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
Deuteronomy 6:7

I agree. When I read children's Bible paraphrases, I am often struck by the inaccuracies - because it is the human author who is re-translating it "for children" - but often writing in his own human errors and biases and agenda, even unwittingly and with the best of intentions.

Side-tracking a bit, I often have the same issue with study Bibles. Yes, they can be helpful, but often times the notes are simply the author's way of weaseling out of hard Scriptures by saying, "the Bible says this, but it really means this [i.e. the exact opposite]" - it simply becomes a convenient way to get out of hard teachings.

Good points, all!
Diana

P.S. We did AWANA for two years, and while it was great, I don't think they're using the KJV any more.

I agree, Diana. I just have a KJV without commentary and enjoy learning from it by reading it and meditating on it. Every time I read it, I gain new insights!

No, I don't think AWANA uses KJV anymore either but I'm glad they did when my children were in it. They have many verses hid in their hearts from all of those years. As they got older, I would have them memorize full phrases of the Word. We must do this with our children if we don't want them to sin against Him. {Psalm 119:11}

From your blog post: "Nothing man writes can compare to the pure Word of God. Nothing transforms like the pure Word of God. Nothing convicts, challenges, reproves or corrects like the pure Word of God. Nothing else can make children 'wise unto salvation through faith...in Christ Jesus.' Nothing can take the Bible's place."

Amen! This sums up the sufficiency of Scripture perfectly. I think children are a lot more capable of memorizing and understanding the Bible than we adults think.

They sure are, Lady Virtue! My three year old children were able to tell me the verses they had memorized. Yes, the Word is sufficient!
Hi Lori,
I decided to purchase the kindergarten course from my homeschool curriculum a while back.we use a very conservative Kjv curriculum. I was horrified at their retell ini of simple bible stories. They added in so much stuff to tickle the ears! So even though it was expensive i threw it out. I felt sick to my stomach every time I read it.
My husband leads us in family bible time ( we use Kjv) and he always explains scripture further if the kids don't understand, or they can ask questions. Consequently my children have respectfully corrected their Sunday school teachers when they have quoted something out of context! But we tell them if they do it, do it respectfully and not in front of the whole class.loved this post. Totally agree.
And just as a side note, all of my kids have biblical names. And they love it when daddy reads the story of their related character in the bible.

This is wonderful, Anon M! It's our duty as parents to make sure our children hide the Word deep into their hearts since no one else will.

I totally agree, and I would say it's the same thing with "biblical movies", after watching these, if there is no proper specifications made by their parents, the children will take for granted all the content of the movie! That's confusing for these little ones! So I used to read directly in the Bible with my children when they were young, and now they are young men (14 and 16), they read by themslves each morning, and we, all the family, study in Proverbs once a week, because my husband wants to teach them and show them how to study the Bible.

You are doing the right thing, Daniele. Our children must be taught the Truth of God's Word!
Lori this is a great post!! Yes our children must be taught the truth of gods word, and the parents have to show them how it's fits. Leading be example. Parents can teach all they want to their children but if they are not living it themselves the children will be confused and won't understand!!!
Let's take the book of James and the powerful powerful message, and if the kids see anger in moms and dads then the message won't sink in. We are all children of Christ and need to be leading by example!!!
At what age do you start reading straight bible and how much? We read from the Jesus Story Book bible which seems to be pretty good. I like it because it brings it all back to Jesus and points to him in each story. I'm also working on the shorter catechism with my son since he was three. We sing Seeds family worship which is bible verses set to music.
This is also an advert for Living (aka home) Education. It gives you time to study the Bible and get into the details in the learning (lesson) time; then at another time you can have a devotional time, or "quiet time" as it's often called. Bit by bit, you can do a lot when the children aren't distracted by commuting to school, or piles of homework.

Thanks for the reminder to keep the Word first in our families!

This is a good post. Many more children need to be taught from the Bible itself however bible "story time" is not wrong. Throughout generations the Jewish people taught from the Talmud and Torah as well as from other books. Young children starting from age 5 went to school for half days where they were taught from different books and were taught in a type of story form as well. To understand what and how to teach our children, a good idea would be to look at the history of the Israelites and how God led them to train up their children. Many people just assume that the men and women of God within the NT were taught differently than those in the OT. But this simply isn't true.
