The Year Of Jubilee

Every seven years, God commanded the Israelites to grant a remission of debts...every creditor shall release what he has loaned to his neighbor.  {Deuteronomy 15:1,2 } People have used this verse to try and pursuade me that this proves that God allows bankruptcy and debt.

However, further down God tells His people, For the Lord your God shall bless you as He has promised you, and you will lend to many nations, but you will not borrow; and you will rule over many nations, but they will not rule over you.  {Deuteronomy 15:6}
So here are more verses that God commands from believers ~

If a man borrows anything from his neighbor, and it is injured or dies while its owner is not with it, he shall make full restitution.
Exodus 22:14

The Lord will open for you His good storehouse, the heavens, to give rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hand; and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow.
Deuteronomy 28:12

The wicked borrows and does not pay back,
but the righteous is gracious and gives.
Psalm 37:21

The rich rules over the poor,
and the borrower becomes the lender’s slave
Proverbs 22:7

Do not be a man who strikes hands in pledge
or puts up security for debts;
if you lack the means to pay,
your very bed will be snatched from under you.
Proverbs 22:26,27

It is better that you should not vow
than that you should vow and not pay.
Ecclesiastes 5:5

Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another;
for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law
Romans 13:8

We are called to lend our money freely and generously but no where can I find that God allows believers to declare bankruptcy and not pay back their debt.  Some have questioned high, unexpected medical bills.  My suggestion is to take God at His Word, obey Him, and see how He will provide.  He is much bigger than medical bills!

We must never underestimate God's ability to provide for us when we are walking in obedience to Him.  He is a kind and generous God who promises to come to the aid of His people.  Trust and obey Him.

This doesn't REALLY have anything to do with debt, or maybe it does, but I have really been meditating on the following verse the past couple of days. I saw it on a billboard, of all places, and it hit me hard that I should take it to heart ...

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chron 7:14

Seems pretty simple, huh?
I wholeheartedly agree with your post and say "thank you" for putting yourself out there for the truth, that is, the Word of God. Sometimes the truth hurts, but is nevertheless, the truth and it can set us free. God is indeed bigger than any debt.

In Malachi 3:10, God, while not speaking of debt, but of giving back to Him first, actually says to "test Him" in this. We were in much debt for many years, but have always striven to honor Him with our first fruits. We also believed it was imperative and a Christian example to the world to pay off our debts. He has blessed us beyond imagination and we are debt free today. We attribute this to His loving kindness and faithfulness to us. He provides in the most amazing ways. Praise God from Whom all blessings flow!
Hi Lori

Thanks for your wonderful blog. I have been learning so much as my husband and I grow in our understanding of the Lord. From the bible passages you have quoted is this to say that debt is bad and we shouldn't borrow money?

My husband and I have a mortgage but no other debt. We are working very hard at paying this debt off and will (if all goes to plan) have paid it off 8 years after borrowing the money. Are we sinning for borrowing the money in the first place?

I would hate to think that we have made a big mistake by borrowing this money from the bank but it was the only way we could afford housing in the very expensive housing market we live in.

Thank you again

I don't think debt or borrowing are sins but the Bible absolutely warns against them. Unfortunately, our society encourages borrowing and debt with credit cards and the high cost of housing. I would suggest you simply pay it off as soon as you can. A good goal is to become completely debt free since the Bible seems to suggest this is the best way to go. We sure don't want to be slaves to anything!
