Celebrating Halloween

Should Christians celebrate Halloween???

I loved Halloween as a child...the costumes, the parties, the trick-or-treating.

When I was college, I studied the history of Halloween and decided I didn't want to celebrate it anymore.

When my children were young, I started celebrating it again...making their costumes, going to the church festival, and trick-or-treating.

Later, I was convicted about it again and quit celebrating it. We'd go to Disneyland with the kids that night or go out to dinner.

The pastor at my church sees it differently...We have a big fall carnival at our church. He tells us if we are having a neighborhood Halloween party, go there instead and be a light...laughing, loving, serving, and talking with our neighbors. Hand out candy with a warm smile and kind words.

I agree with him...The Bible doesn't say to not celebrate Halloween. I completely respect Christians who don't want to celebrate it. I also respect those who want to celebrate it. I think this is where our freedom in Christ comes into play.

I have learned to major on the majors and give grace on the minors. Let others do what they feel led to do...Show grace and love. Celebrating Halloween isn't sin in my eyes.

Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law.  To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.  I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings
I Corinthians 9:19-23

P.S.  I told my sisters I was writing about celebrating Halloween.  They asked me what I wrote.  I said, "I did, then I didn't.  Then I did, then I didn't.  Then my pastor told me to, so I did!"  Just a quick recap! ;)

I love the FUN side of Halloween. I only like for my kids to dress up as fun, good things. This year an army soldier (like his grandpa used to be), a princess, and a kitty cat. I don't like evil and scary costumes at all and won't dress my kids up like that. We will be attending our church's annual Halloween chili dinner and carnival. I think the positive side of it is just a fun family tradition, not to mention my little ones love dressing up and playing pretend! :) I think the festivities can be a great opportunity for positive things.

We refuse to celebrate ANYTHING dark, or satanic. Cute costumes or not, it's all demonic related. You can put a wolf in sheep's clothing, the wolf is still a wolf. Whether you dress your child up as an angel or the devil, you are still celebrating the demonic side of Halloween.

My thoughts exactly. No confusion in our house.
I loved the holiday as a child. It's just pure fun and not evil! We were taught that Nov 1 is All Saints Day and the night before all the ghosts and ghouls come out. You dress like them so that they pass you by. So dressing scary is A-OK! Part of the fun. I don't care for the totally disgusting gruesome stuff that adults like to do. But if my daughter wants to dress up as a witch or my son a mummy then I am fine with that.

I think most of the children that come from a mom like you are actually the ones that do not rebel and can stick with the Lord. It is in homes of parents who demonize everything and condemn it that the kids will tend to have higher chances of going the exact opposite way. I pray none of the children mentioned here do that. I just thought your home must have some happy well-rounded children:)!
Thank you, Victoria. My children are happy well-rounded adults and they never were rebellious, praise the Lord. We always based our rules for them on what Scripture clearly points out as sin...fornication, drunkenness, etc. After that, we tried to make wise decisions as parents on issues such as dating, curfew, etc. Each family has to make up their own standards but it sure helps if the majority of them have the weight of Scripture to back them up!
Hi Lori, I am so pleased I can say the same thing! Our children never were rebellious either they have both grown up to love the Lord! It brings us so much joy knowing that they love their Heavenly Father.
We always explained to them why they were being disciplined and how we wanted them to grow up serving and loving God! I praise God that He always made up the difference between what we could do and what the children needed!
God is so faithful!
Yes, thank God, your children seem like amazing Christians! I agree with what you are saying. I am talking about some of the fear based homes. We should fear The Lord and follow the word but that is opposite of the fear based teaching some children have to live through. They are the ones who rebel and hate God because the word was not taught in love and loving discipline but judgement. I've seen it many times. Sometimes these kids come back trough the grace of God. I really believe the word has to be taught in truth and love or it isn't God's double edge sword but just a weapon. This mom sounds like she trusts in The Lord and teaches her children and doesn't need to scare them into obedience.
My son will be dressing as a Cars pit crew member. We will be attending our church's Harvest Festival where he can play games and have a fun time. We don't do trick-or-treating because of his age and safety issues. The church's Harvest Festival is a great outreach event for our community, and we enjoy it very much!
I think it falls under questions of conscience. Like in these verses that talk about eating and drinking in 1 Corinthians 10:

23 "Everything is permissible"--but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible"--but not everything is constructive. 24 Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others. 25 Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience, 26 for, "The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it." 27 If some unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience. 28 But if anyone says to you, "This has been offered in sacrifice," then do not eat it, both for the sake of the man who told you and for conscience' sake-- 29 the other man's conscience, I mean, not yours. For why should my freedom be judged by another's conscience? 30 If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for? 31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 32 Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God-- 33 even as I try to please everybody in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.

For some they see no evil in celebrating dressing up and handing out candy. For others this is a pagan holiday full of evil intent and meaning. So I believe we shouldn't judge each other on such things.

We don't celebrate Halloween though, and I never will. I did agree to go to a birthday party with a Halloween theme. The mom said it would be more like a carnival. Instead of saying I would check my calendar and think about it, I said yes. Later I regretted being so hasty. It was fun making my children costumes as it was a costume party, and letting them get dressed up. They really enjoyed it. I really liked some of the costumes I had as a kid (I was a hershey's kiss in 1st grade, and loved it.), but when we got there it was night and it was very much a halloween party and I really did not like it. So we will be sticking with no halloween.

Blessings,
April
I think we are a greater witness when we do not celebrate it at all. I have a hard time making something cute out of something so dark and gory. In our family we celebrate something a lot better on the 31st of October.. the Reformation!

Our church has a huge fall festival complete with candy, food games and costumes but dark or scary is not allowed. I always enjoyed trick or treating as a child and I do let my daughter go to a couple of neighbor's homes. She doesn't like scary anything and neither do I. However I am amazed at the people who really enjoy the dark side of halloween like the scary and gross haunted houses...to me that just glorifies evil. Just my opinion though. I hope that those who allow kids to trick or treat go with them always.
Kathy - do you have any reports from verified sources about human sacrifice still occurring on Halloween? It sounds like an urban legend.

That said, I don't care for some of the mischief that occurs on Halloween. When I was 19, a young neighbor on our street was driving his little brother and the brother's friend, when his car was egged. He lost control of the car, and the brother's friend was killed in the resulting crash.

I celebrated Halloween as a kid, but my husband and I have chosen not to do so with our own family. We do, however, teach our children that each family has its own rules, so we don't judge what others choose to do.
I had never heard of Russ Dizdar, and don't consider that to be a verified news source. A web presence and media appearances do not make someone an authority. I couldn't find anything from the FBI or other major police forces to indicate that human sacrifice is occurring on Halloween. Snopes.com indicated that some animal shelters will not permit adoptions right before Halloween, but the main concern seems to be animals being used as props and then discarded. There were a few reports of animal mistreatment, but those seems to be related to kids up to no good as opposed to actual Wiccan groups.
Halloween, a.k.a. the American Holiday we celebrate started with children making harmless mischief on the night before October 31st otherwise known as mischief night today. It was around the Victorian era people started to give candy instead to make it more fun and safe and keep the kids occupied. It had nothing to do with Satan or devil worship or even the Wiccan Holiday Samhain. I love this post because of the freedom you speak of. My parents would let us dress up but NOT in costumes that were not monsters or ghosts. However, Frank E. Peretti, the famous Christian writer said in his autobiography, monsters made him feel normal since he had major physical issues and was made fun of in school. His parents' love also guided him toward Jesus. The combination was what helped him become the writer he is today. So God can use many avenues for his purpose. Halloween to me is a chance to interact with neighbors (and get to know them), dress up, and celebrate Fall. All because the devil took yet another thing and made it evil, like the occult and the barely there costumes doesn't mean we as Christians through Jesus can't fight back and make it fun. Christmas trees were pagan in origin, I still put the Nativity under it every year. On another note, hope you are doing well Lori, much love!
One year I was walking my dog in another neighborhood near my home and the gore and bloody, screaming dismembered "props" in one yard made me so upset.....I went home and said to myself, "THAT'S IT"!!!! i can't stand this any more".

I went home and decided that I would would be the "brightest home on the block....since I'm a child of the "light". I got two spot lights and made a sign for my front yard and nailed it to the tree....with the spot lights shining on it., It reads. from John 8:12, "I am the light of the world....whoever believes in me SHAL NOT WALK IN DARKNESS....but will have the LIGHT OF LIFE".....LOVE, jESUS. I've done that for the last 10 years!!

I carve crosses in my pumpkins and give the kids lots of candy. They usually say, "I like your house....it's not scary". I put sweet incense and candles on the walkway.....turn on the front lights....and greet them with "God bless you". The parents usually thank me. Now.....isn't that the way Christians should do Halloween???? j I say.....more light and more scriptures....stobe lights....whatever....to be different from this dark world!!!

That is super cool!
I also grew up trick-or-treating, but it was VERY benign in our teeny little town. None of the horrific decorations and props you see nowadays (none of the sex-saturated costumes for little girls either). I had taken my son trick-or-treating every year since he was a baby. But then Jesus saved me when he was just 3 1/2 years old in late November. I had a whole year to figure out what to do, but Halloween just didn't sit right with me.

For many years, we would go to my grandma's farm and roast hot dogs and marshmallows. My family (who are all lost) tried to shame for denying him the fun of Halloween, but I simply told them, "If there was a KKK costume party in town and they were handing out candy, even if the fine folks at my church were participating, I could not. Period."

The historical significance of the holiday had nothing to do with it. For me, it's what it represents NOW. What would a foreigner completely unfamiliar with Halloween gather about the meaning of it from our decorations, the costumes, the commercials, t.v. shows and movies that targeted for the Halloween season? They would decide it is celebrating fear, darkness, death, destruction, and the power of the demonic. These are exactly what Jesus came to destroy and was victorious over. Christianity stands for peace, light, life, renewal, and freedom from the power of sin.

Soooo, we began "Tract-or-treating". Going door-to-door GIVING the light of Jesus to all the homes in our neighborhood and taking prayer requests! What other day are people sitting outside EXPECTING someone to approach them? :)
