Ironing His Own Shirt

The Romneys were interviewed recently at their large vacation home. Chris Wallace told them he noticed there were no maids or servants around. The Romneys told him they like to do the work themselves. Mr. Romney even ironed his shirt that morning. He was helping his wife make breakfast and helps clean the dishes after meals. This is a family that is not afraid of hard work.

More and more Americans seem to be afraid of hard work. We are raising a generation that feels entitled to things they didn't work for. This is a very dangerous path we are presently on. I want to make it very clear that I am not opposed to helping those truly in need but our present welfare system has destroyed families. People have made it a way of life instead of something to use in troubled times. Here is a fabulous article by Randy Alcorn about helping the poor which we are commanded to do by God.

God wants us to work hard. It is good for us. When we work hard for something we appreciate it. Work gives a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.

Sure, the Romneys could have many people to help them around their home but they have decided to do it for themselves. The Bible is full of admonitions to work and not be lazy. Don't expect others to pay your way through life. God rewards those who work hard. Teach your children from a very young age to work and to do it cheerfully.

For even when we were with you,
we would give you this command:

If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.

Agreed! And that is great that the Romneys are not afraid of hard work. Maybe that means as president Romney will require others to work instead of loaf off the government??
Good job bringing up the subject of politics yet again. So many shy from it. I plan to have at least one political post coming up as the election draws near.

I agree. I was out on disability and I didn't have to work for a while. I then got a job when I was better and was laid off a tear later. I collected unemployeement for a long time. I have to say even with my working since 16 and always having the great work ethic my parents gave to me, the lifestyle is very tempting. Living off the government and getting things for free is a break, not having to get up early is wonderful, and doing whatever you want is a dream, for a little while. I became complacent, depressed, and overweight. There are many more benefits to hard work than there are to staying home. I thank God he reminded me of my dreams and helped me get going again. I pray that for other people who are tempted and stuck in the system. My husband and sister and parents encouraged me but others are not so blessed.

I was just talking to my sister in law about this today! We were talking about how the really poor in our country often have it better off than the middle class. For example: My husband works very hard, we are middle class, and we are barely making it some months! But my sister in law and her husband are in school, living in subsidized apartments, receiving $500 a month in food stamps, and qualify for medicaid...all free medical care. It just doesn't seem right. I believe in taking care of the poor and needy, but not when they can work and take care of themselves.

Anyway - I love the Romney's (both Mitt and Anne). Praying that something good will happen on election day! :)

I know exactly what you mean..if Americans start to be lazy as they think they're entitled to everything, this is what happens in Latin Maerica, that's why they keep on voting for Chaves and people like him over and over..they grow the poor population bigger and bigger giving them and taking from the people, like us that work sooo hard and young ones like my son in law!! I cannot believe my country, who my father taught me it was the greatest in the world and anyone can become a millionaire, the land of opportunity, the ONLY ONE IN A KIND, exceptional!!...and all you had to do is work HARD!!!!!!!!! I'm so sorry, I do hope Mr. Obama goes home, otherwise, the USA will not be what it has been for 200 years, it'll be another American country, only in the North, it's scary!! Excellent post! My husband is a community college professor, and every semester he has many students who register for courses, but when they get their financial aid check, they disappear. Thanks for this encouraging word about the Romneys.

That's awesome to hear! The system is way to easy to work I think. But the way I grew up, literally, if we didn't work, we didn't eat. There were many times we would lose a treat because our work wasn't done right. Now, I know what I want and I work for it. It's a good attitude to have :)

Very well said. I couldn't agree more. I think America is training people to be lazy. If people would turn the television off and read their Bible instead we wouldn't be in such a poor state. If we want God's blessing on our country then we need to value what He says in His holy book.

The other day as I ironed my hubby's shirts, pressing love and warm thoughts into each push, I wondered if Ann R. ever ironed Mitt's shirts. There is is!! Thanks Lori.

Great post and very true! Why would anyone work if you have everything paid for you? The working class and middle class are struggling to pay bills. The brake and help should for the working people, that way everyone should help the country economy to turn around. Praying for the election day!

The way we deal with the poor and needy reflects our love for the Lord. "In as much as you have done i to the least of the these...you have done it unto me." We cannot not know the whys and wherefores of other peoples lives. "judge not, that you be not judged."
God, in the end, will judge us for our attitudes and behavior towards other.

The issue of the poor is not an easy one, and we as believers MUST be proactive in our churches with helping those in need. Christians in the United States have been actively involved in helping the poor and are the creators of most of the charitable programs from Soup Kitchens, Pregnancy Centers and the Salvation Army.

The question is not should the government help the poor, but how can the government best help the poor? Government is usually quite inefficient and bloated in administration as compared to charitable organizations. Just like with the private sector, the more that government can stay out of it and encourage charities to do the work of helping the needy, the more effectively will the needy be ministered to by people who actually care about them, not "Big Brother" administering one more program that creates dependence.

This is a big part of the problem with government administered programs, that those who do it for a job are nowhere as effective as those who do it for a ministry. We who give to many charities, and to the poor are contributing a double portion. Our critics want the poor taken care of by government, but check their own giving to the poor and my guess is that many of them, like Joe Biden are woefully hypocritical. They spew all kinds of mocking and ignorant words at those of us who want limited government, yet they care little or nothing for the poor as it shows by their giving.

Check out the facts and discover that the poor themselves give 4.6% of their earnings... more than the average, yet 16 out of 20 of the highest giving states by % of income are Republican. And much of the giving in blue democratic states also belongs to those who have a religious affiliation.

Bottom line for the critics ... please look at how much you gave last year to charities AND to the poor, then ask yourself if you really care about the poor. We believe in a government safety net for the poor, but believe even more in giving of our own money and time to charities at home and abroad who serve the poor and will help them move up and out of poverty. Let's all get on the same page and give... and let's keep government only providing a safety net.
