Do We Really Need to Eat Organic?

Organic is usually more expensive than non-organic food.  Is it worth the price difference? Is it really healthier?  I believe it absolutely is better.  Many will argue that non-organic food is fine for you. How can you think that food sprayed with a ton of toxic chemicals is good for you?

My mom drove 30 miles each way once a week to get organic foods for us starting when I was five years old, over 50 years ago, way before it was popular.  She had been diagnosed with colitis, told it was incurable, and went searching for an alternative. She KNEW it was curable, despite what the doctors told her.

So after years of trying different things, she was finally completely healed. She lived on organic fruit and vegetable juices to let her colon heal. Then she ate very healthily, cutting out all meat and dairy until it was completely healed. My cousin's son is healing his Crohns this way also!

The body has an amazing ability to heal itself given the right fuel. Food that is not organic is pesticides, herbicides and toxic fertilizers. These chemicals weren't made for the human body. There is just way too many autoimmune diseases and cancer to not be concerned. Food, in its natural state the way God made it, is perfect food for us.

Man cannot improve upon what God made. Meat that is not organic is filled with antibiotics, hormones, and pesticides.  Cows were meant to eat grass, not grains.  Common sense tells me we should be eating grass fed meat, the way God intended.

On the news this morning was a scientist who said that unless your food is labeled organic, it is filled with hormones, chemicals, preservatives, etc.  The foods have been tested and are only allowed by the FDA to be labeled organic ONLY if they are free from all these harmful things.

Cancer is expensive. It is a terrible disease.  Toxic chemicals hurt your immune system's ability to fight cancer.  A healthy immune system is crucial in fighting off disease.  I am not afraid of germs. A healthy immune system is also the best way to protect yourself from germs.

So do everything in your ability to have a healthy immune system. Cut out eating at restaurants, going to movies, etc. if it is the only way you can buy organic food. Losing your health is not fun. Being healthy is wonderful and you have a lot to do with how healthy you are, so start taking responsibility for your health.

Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper
and be in health, even as thy soul prospers.

Have you seen the documentary "Food, Inc."? It is very eye opening! It exposes the meat companies that control most of what goes into the grocery stores. It was totally life changing for my husband and I. We are going to be getting chickens in the Spring, as well as buying grass fed beef from a local farmer. Unfortunately there are not a lot of organic fruits and vegetables near us, but we are doing as much as we can!

For anyone who is interested in watching Food, Inc. It's on Netflix instant streaming.

Food Inc demonstrated how bad the US government has been (that was made during the Bush administration) in jobs for the boys and allowing domination of a few large corporations within Industries. It should never have been allowed to happen.

Actually, most restaurants don't use organic foods. Each time you eat out, you are most likely eating conventional fruits and vegetables, sprayed with pesticides.
Thanks for sharing your wisdom. I am trying to do more and more organic and cooking from scratch. I agree with you on the importance.

God bless, Amy
Organic is not just healthier for us, it tastes so much better too!
As a former organic grower for others I am distressed at how watered down organic labeling has become. Buying local from folks you know gives you the best food.
We grown as much of our own as we can and buy our meat from a neighbor so we know what goes into the animal.

We get our organic food from our local health food store who gets it from an organic grower just several miles away. It is great!
I believe, ideally, in growing our own produce. I have watched Food Inc, as did my husband. We are small farmers (about 100 acres) and it was eye opening. Small farms are becoming a thing of the past as big industrial farms are taking over. The small farmer cares more about what they are raising as we are more vested. We don't have share holders telling is what to do. We are out there day after day doing the work...ourselves. My issue with buying organic is this. Do we really trust our government (USDA, FDA) when they allow something to be labeled "organic"?? I certainly don't trust them with anything else. I'm sure there are "organic" farms that are NOT following the correct protocol but just haven't been caught. If they have been found out, have we ever heard about it? Probably not, the government isn't too hip on blowing the whistle on themselves. Bottom line, grow your own and if that's not possible, look into a CSA. No matter what, investigate where your food is coming from! Change in the food industry will only come when the majority of the people demand it with their purchasing power. Money talks...

Hey Shelley!

Just curious about something:

"...and if that's not possible, look into a CSA."

What is a CSA?
found this

"Community Supported Agriculture is a system in which consumers receive food directly from the farmers who produce it. But unlike a farmers' market system, supporters of community agriculture actually share in part of the farmers' risk. That is, they pay in advance for a portion of the farmer's total crop. Crops that do well will be abundant in the share, crops that do less well will be less abundant. For their part, the farmers have a stable income that doesn't depend on sunny weather on farmer's market days."
IWe too are small farmers and I am finding more and more people are wanting to buy directly from us. They know we care for our animals, let them see the sun, even in winter in MN, and treat them kindly.
Pesticides are harmful but money talks and buys and covers up lies. You don't need college to know this, even though I did go ;-)
Think about how you feel when you eat fresh food from your garden compared to from a store or restaurant. Let's hope that people becoming more aware of the "junk" in their food will help the small family farmers come back.
Great post. I really believe that we can vote with our wallets and create change. If more and more people demand that their food is pesticide free, I think changes will happen.
So sad that it is so much more expensive to buy the healthier options. I have a friend who buys directly from a farmer, vegetables and free range chicken meat (I think that is what she called it). She swears the taste is much much better...but the price is very high!
organic. definitely. to me it's worth every extra penny. there are enough toxins in the air we breathe...we don't need to ingest any more than we already do.
For the most part, I buy organic, especially vegetables, because I eat large portions of them.
We get somethings organic. I need to start buying organic meat.
Wonderful post ... sadly eating organic is beyonds the means of a lot of people, especially those who need it the most.
After going to You Tube and looking up Monsanto I started eating organic! As a child I never liked milk and I never had any problems not drinking it. There are other ways to consume calcium. I always stress to my daughter, "Buy hormone free milk!"

As we grow older and become more in tuned to our bodies we can tell there are certain things we need to stay away from altogether or eat very little of. Red meat, whether it's organic or not, is hard on a persons digestive tract. It sits in your intestines and ferments. Yuck!

I like to buy produce that is grown locally (within the USA) because the FDA has no controll over food grown in other countries! You have no idea what they put on stuff to make it grow. Great "O" post!~Ames
I agree with you. Good to follow yours (and others here) advice! {:-Deb
great post and great responses
When my daughter attended a holistic rehabilitation in Minneapolis I attended many classes about exactly this. Organic is so expensive that, sadly, many cannot benefit from it.

There has to be a better way.

Thank you for sharing this thought provoking and thoughtful post.

I wish I had more answers than questions about this subject.

A+
