Cleaning With Joy

My granddaughter was hungry when she woke up, so I fixed her a smoothie with kefir, frozen berries, bananas, organic juice and a little stevia. Then I fixed her a large piece of my homemade bread, a big glob of grass fed butter {She always asks if she can have a piece of butter while she is waiting! What is it with little children and plain butter??!!}, and an organic egg on top with a runny yolk. She gobbled it up!

Then I made my breakfast of two eggs and potatoes cooked in ghee and then slices of avocado. I sat at the table to eat it. She promptly went to the silverware drawer, got out a fork, and began to eat my breakfast with me. I said, "Emma, you already ate your breakfast." She quickly responded, "I am just trying to help you out, Grandma!" {Children bring so much joy to life.}

Later, I was cleaning the bathroom. She wanted to help so badly. I was using Bar Keepers Friend on the sinks and only had one sponge. She kept asking me to help. Later, as I was thinking about it, I decided next time she cleans a bathroom with me, I want to have a small bottle filled just with water, a small sponge, and some baking soda for her to clean the sink and mirrors with me. I want items that are completely non-toxic.

Whenever I am sweeping my floors, she wants to sweep with me. This is the time to begin training your children, when they are young and eager to learn. Yes, it takes more time but it will be well worth it in a few years when they are older and can help you out.

"Mothers stressed again and again how important it is to do things with your children, household chores as well as other family projects. At such times, mother functions as teacher; she works alongside the children, imparting lessons in how to organize one's work and carry it through completion. The younger the child and the less his/her ability, the greater is his/her enthusiasm. Take advantage of it!"{Mary Ann Cahill}

Also, clean with joy! Sing while doing it and have a smile on your face. Never complain about it. Tell your children while you are cleaning the dishes how happy you are to have dishes to clean. When cleaning the sink, remind them how blessed we are to have running, hot water, soap, etc. Train them at an early age to be thankful for all the good things God has bless us with!

Charge them that are rich in this world,
that they be not highminded,
nor trust in uncertain riches,
but in the living God,
who giveth us richly all things to enjoy.
I Timothy 6:17

Lori, how old is Emma? She sounds adorable! And what is ghee?
Happy Easter to you and Ken!

She just turned three and she is absolutely adorable! Here's a link to the ghee I use. My sister, who took a year long nutrition class, said it is by far the healthiest thing to cook food in.

Thank you, Lori, I have noticed it is Lactose Free! I get dreadful headaches when I have lactose so I shall be looking for this in my supermarket.
My two year old is so anxious to help. She folds washcloths and some of her clothes and helps put them away. She wipes up spills on the floor. She picks up her own toys. She even put away my plate and glass and fork for me after lunch today while I was putting the baby down for her nap. I didn't even have to ask her! It's good for kids to learn to do chores from an early age and to see that they can contribute to the family. It helps them develop a good work ethic and a sense of self-confidence that they will never get any other way.
My mother, bless her, tried so hard to get me to enjoy cleaning, but I'm convinced that some of us just aren't born with that gene. I hate cleaning no matter how much I try. On the other hand, my husband is almost obsessive compulsive with his cleaning and loves it.

You need to stop saying you hate cleaning and you weren't born with the gene or you will never enjoy cleaning. Start telling yourself you love cleaning, that whatever you do, you will do it heartily for the Lord, and LEARN to enjoy the process. Paul said that he had to learn to be content. We must also learn to enjoy things and give it as an offering to the Lord.

Start telling yourself you love cleaning(quote) - not sure this is anything Paul meant. Perhaps you can locate the Scripture to support this. I am thankful for my dentist and keeping up with my teeth is necessary, but I don't have to be 'joyful' while getting a root canal. Tell yourself you love an area that doesn't come automatic with joy. No thank you. I tell Jesus I love Him, thank Him I have a home with which to clean and think on His Word during tasks. To do as you suggest would be untrue for me. And not liking something is NOT a sin.

Our thoughts and words are very powerful. I have been taught if I don't like someone to decide I do like them, say it to myself, act like I like them, and soon after, I do like them. Something that must be done every day is completely different than something that is only done once in a while, if ever, like a root canal that causes pain. I used to hate to do a lot of things like weeding, ironing, washing dishes, etc. but I decided a long time ago to learn to enjoy them and I have. It is mind over matter.

Hi there, Urbanliving.
In the book of Joel, God told His people to say that they were strong, when in fact they were weak. I do believe that if we do not like something that God sees as love and service to others, there is nothing wrong with a good confession of faith - saying that we love it! I know of women who have done this and ended up loving what they do!

It is a lot like ‘fake it till you make it’!

I have always thought I was very blessed because I love doing house work; I love seeing a room go from dreadful to lovingly clean and tidy; that is just the way I am wired! :o) Weird, hey!

Joel 3:10
Beat your ploughshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong.
Great verses and insight, Jilly!

Thank you Lori, I think a good confession beat a bad one hands down!
Where we like it or not it still needs to be done (I certainly don't have a cleaning fairy in my house) so I just do it and do it quickly so I can move onto things I really enjoy. I find having music in the background makes it a nicer task and I often do my cleaning with a cat around my feet so I chat to her!! I don't string out my cleaning I do it first thing in the morning and it really doesn't take very long (we don't have any children at home, small house and we are quite tidy people).

Jo, I'm not a fan of cleaning either, but like you, I find having music helps get me pumped up, especially old school funk, soul or R & B. "Boogie Wonderland" by Earth, Wind and Fire makes dusting a bit more fun.
Love it!! My two year old loves to help me and is actually pretty independent about it all and surprised me what she can do. Your blog always encourages me to let them help me at this young age. Tonight I asked for a volunteer to set the table for dinner and she has volunteered the past two nights and does a great job. Great post about starting them early. I am trying!!!
