Why the Popularity of Cooking and Home Shows?

Have you noticed how popular cooking shows and home improvement shows have become? Why do you believe this to be true? I believe it is because a woman's heart is in her home, no matter what society has told her. So few women know how to cook today and few are home long enough to make their houses into a home. Having a gorgeously decorated house with all the latest kitchen appliances doesn't make a home. They have listened to the lies of society.

Women were created by God, the Author and Creator of life, to be home-centered NOT career-centered. Their place is to be at home. One of our most important roles is to shop for and prepare nourishing food for our families. Most women don't know how to do this or don't have the time to do it. They were never taught and were raised on fast or convenience foods. They are drawn to the cooking shows because they love the idea of home-cooked and yummy food. Many have big, fancy kitchens that are largely not used.

The home shows are based upon remodeling and fixing up homes. Most people want a nice home. They want to be home. They enjoy being home. There really is no place like home. We work hard to have nice homes, yet so few are home very often. Most homes sit empty all day long and when the occupants are in them, there is not a lot of peace and rest. We have come so far from God's original design that we spend all this time working away from home so we can make this house that sits empty all day into a beautiful house!

Women need to learn to live on their husband's income, not look around at all the beautiful homes then be discontent with what they have been given. All of these home shows actually breed a heart of discontentment since most can't afford to have a perfectly decorated home with all the modern appliances. Instead of getting a career to make your home like this, be content with a simple, clean home and make the best of what you have like the majority of people in past generations did before us.

Lastly, learn to enjoy being home. After you home is clean and tidy and your nourishing meals are all planned or on the stove; if you have children, play with them and teach them a new art. You can teach your daughters how to sew, how to garden, how to organize, how to paint, etc. There are many options out there! Get outside as much as you can and enjoy God's beautiful creation. Sunshine and fresh air are great for you and can lift your spirits up.

Instead of watching the cooking and home shows often, if you are finding yourself discontent, stop watching them and spend your time making your home as nice as you can within your husband's income.

But godliness with contentment is great gain.
1 Timothy 6:6

Thanks for this post Lori. This morning our whole family had to get up and be out the door to go in two different directions earlier than we even do for Church service. It made me so glad that most mornings my children and I get to stay home without rushing around or dealing with bad weather. I am truly thankful for my home and am so grateful that I get to spend so much time in it.
Great post Lori. I am always working on contentment! I think many many families don't know how to cook simple meals. Life can get busy and there is a need for quick food. But when most people have that need and think of "fast food" they think McDonalds. When I think about fast food I think about oatmeal and bananas. I think about making the kids a protein smoothie. I think about the hard boiled eggs I've put in the fridge. I think about string cheese. I think about lunch meat and crackers. I think about apples. And pickles. These are all things that can be quickly grabbed and eaten in the car, or very quickly prepared. I actually think the cooking shows can confuse people because the thought of cooking seems so overwhelming and "talent based". Like this is an activity for people who've gone to school or dedicated their lives to good meals. Someone asked once what we were having for dinner and I answered "beans". They were shocked. "What do you mean beans? Just beans?" And I explained well, it does have a ham hock in it, but yes it is just pinto beans in the crockpot and we eat it like soup or make it into burritos and everyone likes it. So yes "just beans" is a good meal and it works!

This is true. I enjoy Pioneer Woman's show because of the warmth of her home, but I don't enjoy cooking shows in general. I am not a talented cook (and I am trying to learn to enjoy it) but the cooking shows are just so beyond my talents that they aren't motivational to me. We do a lot of oatmeal and organic eggs and fruit around here. I have small children so I am concerned about them getting the nutrition they need to grow properly and be healthy. I wish there was more information on teaching women basic healthy meals by a source you can trust. I enjoy Pinterest but I don't need more recipes, I need someone who is natural food minded AND knowledgable about nutrition as well as understands the ways of God to teach simple meals. I know Lori has a few of good posts on this but her blog isn't dedicated to food.
Hi Lori. Hope you are feeling better. I love being at home. I can go 2 weeks without ever stepping foot in a car and leaving my home. All I need is a pantry stocked with food. There is no other reason that I need to get out. Nothing brings me greater pleasure than cooking healthy meals for my family, working in the garden and keeping our home neat and tidy. I love to watch the cooking shows to get new recipes and kitchen tips. I am content and love the simple decor in my home. Therefore I don't feel the need to watch the decorating shows. Thank You for being a Titus 2 woman and sharing biblical truth with all of us.
As usual Lori I'm so grateful for your teaching. This is excellent! Thank you for all the work that goes into these great posts.

I pray you are feeling better every day.
I don't watch these reality TV shows as I don't enjoy them at all - in fact we don't watch much TV these days, rather stick to Netflix or DVDs where we can choose our viewing.

I love cooking, a passion past on from my mother and I have passed it on to my 2 sons. I home cook all our meals and rarely buy takeaway (not as nice as home cooked meals and very expensive). I do like to buy cooking magazines and often try new recipes from them. Once read, I share them about with my friends so they too can try out the recipes.

My kitchen is a working kitchen, used everyday - my home is one we live in and is cosy and inviting. Whilst I may not be at home during the day, my husband is as he is retired and I make sure the home is nice for him during the day. Even though I might not be always home, my home remains very important to me and i love wandering about doing thing in it.
I love keeping my home and I taught my daughters to keep theirs. Cooking, cleaning, decorating, gardening, etc. Now my oldest is teaching her sons the same things. These skills are not just for daughters. Sons may be bachelors for a while and will need this knowledge also.

I taught both my sons to cook (I have no daughters) and clean and one is now married and loves to cook for his wife. In fact he finds cooking so relaxing after a day at work, he does almost all the cooking. He experiments with recipes, makes up his own and can be found in the kitchen making bread late into the evening. He is very good and the more he cooks the better he is getting. My other son is vegan and he too likes to experiment in the kitchen and try out new recipes.
