Living Pure In An Impure World

Our society is becoming more impure by the second it seems.  What use to be forbidden is now celebrated.  What use to be called "sin" is now considered close to being a hero with a phone call from the President.  Promiscuity and sexual immorality is everywhere.  How are we, who call ourselves Christians, set apart and holy, to live pure lives?

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is key to becoming pure. He must fill your life and the only way He does this is by believing on Jesus Christ as Lord of your life.  As soon as you truly believe, He invades your life and calls you a new creature in Christ.  Christ, the Creator of the universe, now lives inside of you.

Now you must walk in the Spirit.  You must believe who God says that you are.  How do we walk in the Spirit?  We are transformed by the renewing of our mind {Romans 12:2}.  You must let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly {Colossians 3:16}.  You cannot expect to walk in purity if you never study and meditate upon God's Word.  If you only meditate and feast upon the ways of the world, you will never live a pure life.

How can a young man keep his way pure?  By keeping it according to Your word {Psalm 119:9}.  Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against Thee {Psalm 119:11}.  You must know God's Word.  You must read God's Word.  You must hide his Word in your heart.

Many say they do not have time.  You have time to eat multiple times a day.  The Bible should be your daily bread.  It is more important than food.  It changes you and makes you like Jesus.  If you want to live pure, happy lives in an impure world, you must take time to know God's Word.

And the children of Israel, which were
come again out of captivity,
and all such as had separated
themselves unto them from
the filthiness of the heathen of the land,
to seek the Lord God of Israel.
Ezra 6:21

***Remember, you are a new creature IN CHRIST,
covered with God's grace and mercy, and walk in newness of life!

I don't understand; who got called a hero and got a phone call from the President?
Staying pure in every way should be our goal; even when it is hard! The world doesn't make it easy that is for sure.

A professional athlete let the world know that he was a homosexual so our President called him to congratulate him. I think this is very sad...Whenever any athlete or movie star lets the world know they are homosexual, it is front page news here in America.

I believe we should love and pray for homosexuals and treat them with complete respect, but not congratulate them for being homosexual.

Have you also noticed everyone swears now days? I mean even Christians. It's quite unsettling; don't you think? I was out on a ministry lunch one day and the lady I was having lunch with just swore; I am not saying I think she is a bad person she is quite a lovely lady, in fact I really love her, but I couldn't get over the fact that she was in ministry and she was swearing at the lunch table!
I mean I am sure we all let one slip from time to time and if I said I didn’t I would be lying but it seems to be on the increase and I find that sad!
People have said to me not to feel so upset about it, it is just a word and God still loves but I am still trying to process that.

Do you think it is wrong?
Thanks for reading!

I do think it is wrong, Jilly. I have noticed the same thing, especially among young Christians. I just always think of this verse ~

Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.
Ephesians 4:29

This makes it pretty clear what should be coming out of our mouths!

Lori I can understand young Christians doing it; it takes time to grow in God and His Word. It’s ministers I don’t quite understand, however, perhaps they are just like the rest of us and they battle with problems and sin too.
I hope you are having a great day!
It is so sad to see how sexual immorality is harming our children today, Wendy. I rarely listen to negative news since it is so depressing. ""But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." Luke 21:28

We have hope, an anchor for our soul!
God is, I'm sure, well pleased with your words.
Sadden, because of the sin and pleased with those who stand-up for what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, admirable or praiseworthy.
You have done just that!

Thank you, Christine! I definitely want to please the Lord rather than men.

Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. He was born a Jewish peasant, lived a Jewish peasant, and died a Jewish peasant. He lived his life among the masses, touching the untouchables, feeding the hungry, healing the sick, bringing comfort to he masses, uplifting women, eating and drinking with the publicans and sinners, and on and on. As we go out into the world we go with the assurance of God's love for us, and we go in love for our neighbors, whoever they are. And with whom did Jesus have confrontations, and who had to get rid of him because he was such a threat to them?

Yes Genny!

Jesus was the most gracious and humble King of a man to walk this earth. He came to give life and grace to all who will accept it by giving up His own perfect life like a spotless lamb for you and me. What a Savior we have!

But the story does not stop there. Jesus always had the perfect balance of grace, love and truth. He never watered down the truth for the sake of love, but instead said to all who were caught in sin, "Go and sin no more."

Why go and sin no more? For two reasons. If we are believers it is because this is how we show that we truly love him and accept Him as Lord. Jesus says that one day many will come in His name and say, "Lord, Lord did we not do many great things for you?" And his response will be "Get away from me I never knew you." Knowing Christ is most important to the life of the believer, and if we know Jesus, we know he hates sin, yet loves the sinner and longs for the sinner to drink from the fountain of life that only He can give.

The day is coming soon when Jesus rides in on a White Horse with armies by his side and he has a a sword in his mouth, and blood on His robe:

"Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords" (Revelation 19:11-16).

This does not look like the loving, full of grace person that many churches talk about today. There are many passages by Paul, Peter and John, even the Words of Jesus Himself which speak of the wrath and judgment to come. God's grace and love demands justice, and if the world around us will not listen to His clear voice and calling for repentance, there "will be weeping and gnashing of teeth" for far too many.

Some churches emphasize God's love and grace alone, while others emphasize God's righteousness and judgment. Both are part of His truth and we as believers are called to balance that truth as Christ did. We must hate the sin, love the sinner, and tell the sinner to sin no more. We do not tell them sin no more for our sake, but for theirs.

There will be a Great Day of Reckoning for each one of us, and all who do not have their name written in the Book of Life will eternally perish. They will be judged according to their works, which makes it important that even non-believers lead righteous lives. I believe there will be degrees of punishment and truthfully we will all get what we deserve for our lives lived in the future life. The only difference is that those who claim Christ as Savior and truly believe that God raised Him from the dead will get judged based on the life of Jesus and not our own, when it comes to punishment. Christ has paid it all for us and with that great love we try to live lives where we can "go and sin no more."

This is the good news of the gospel of Jesus! That God has never stopped his judgment and wrath to come on sin, but that many can escape his wrath by accepting Jesus as Savior! What great news we must share with all who will listen. That judgment is coming, but God has built a bridge to escape, and we have to do nothing but believe in Him to find it.

Can't wait to see you in DC :)! I hope its warmed up by then.
Lori, I completely agree with all of your sentiments! I have tried explaining this to my husband, who feels our daughters need to be in a school with other children. I told him the world is dangerous, and it is our duty to protect them. I want so very much to keep our babies safe at home, but my husband feels as if we shouldn't do that. I need to submit to him obviously. Maybe Ken has some words of advise for my husband? He may listen to another Godly leader, evenm if he won't listen to me...
Hi Ashleigh,

I am sure your husband is listening to you, he simply disagrees with you :). He thinks that the socialization with being with others outweighs the need to be, in his mind, over protective by pulling them out of the world. I see both sides, and suggest that the key is to allow your daughters into the schools BUT be VERY vigilant to monitor what they are taught, by whom they are taught, and how they are responding to it. We did this with our children, but could have done a better job with ballet teachers and coaches who sucked life out of kids.

If they show a vibrate love for Jesus every day and are joyful in the school system, all that you need to do is be sure they get the Word fed to them by you, their parents, every day. Unfortunately for us, one daughter in 9th grade asked to come home to be home schooled because the supposedly terrific high school was teaching her nothing she believed, and she felt exposed to a bunch of garbage from the kids. Some senior boys had a game on to see how many 9th graders they could bed before the year was out. It only took a few months to pull her out and homeschool her until her senior year then to a Christian High School to see if she learned anything. The homeschooling did not hurt her as she got 4.0 her senior year.

Our second daughter begged not to be homeschooled through Junior High as she craved the social. We agreed as long as we saw her vibrant faith, joyful spirit and not mixed up with naughty girls. All these things were violated within 2-3 months, and she came home to be homeschooled and did fine. There were so many other friends she had because the program had all the area homeschooled kids meet together a day or two a week for their sciences and other things. These friends became very close.

There is no one perfect choice on this. Just go with what the Lord places on your husband's heart. Express your concerns, and leave a little room for things not to be perfect. But if you see the vibrant faith in Jesus start to sour, and the joy disappear, start asking why, and soon you may find the sin around them is oppressing them. Then look to your many alternatives. A Christian school is also not perfect, but a great alternative to many public schools. Homeschooling or partial homeschooling and perhaps Charter Schools are alternatives that may work.

The Lord will bless your faithfulness in both protecting your children, but also allowing them not to be so sheltered that they do not see the world for what it is. The world is one big Las Vegas that promises you success, wealth and pleasures and delivers nothing but hopelessness and shame. Teach them each day what is Truth and they will walk in it. I would be more concerned about which college they go to than which high school :{.
