Catering to Your Tastebuds

Do you cater to your taste buds? Do you only eat something because it tastes good without having any idea what is in it and what it does to your health? I want to encourage you to STOP! Everything you put into your mouth affects your health. It doesn't just go in one end and out the other.

Food is meant to nourish our bodies. Sure, a treat once in awhile is okay but why not make that treat something that does not have these ingredients in them like the Nestle Hot Cocoa Mix ~

Sugar, Corn Syrup Solids, Dairy Product Solids, Vegetable Oil {Partially hydrogenated coconut or palm kernel and hydrogenated soybean}, Cocoa Processed with Alkali, and less than 2% salt, Cellulose Gum, Sodium Caseinat, Dipotassium Phosphate, Sodium Aluminosilicate, Mono-and Diglycerides, Guar Gum, Aritificial Flavor, Sucralose.

There is not one healthy, nourishing item in this list. Sugar is very detrimental to your health and it is the first several ingredients. Hydrogenated oils are not even fit for human consumption and then there are chemicals that should not be ingested into the human body.

Instead, fix some organic milk {raw milk if you can find it} or coconut milk with organic cocoa powder, a little bit of stevia and pinch of salt and it will be much healthier for you; real food and nutritious. If you want a power bar, you can buy ones at the health food store with healthy ingredients or make your own from scratch. Cookies are easy to make with REAL ingredients; ingredients you can pronounce and food that hasn't been overly processed in any way. My daughters make these yummy Peanut Butter Cups when they have a sweet tooth!

We shouldn't depend upon our health care system to keep us healthy. Yes, they are wonderful to have in emergency situations but we need to be responsible for what is going into our bodies. Therefore, stop catering to your taste buds and cater to your body instead. Nourish it with food that will create good health and a strong body. Work on building a strong immune system and then go out and be salt and light to a dark and decaying world!

Whether therefore ye eat, or drink,
or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:31

Thanks so much for this post!

I thought I was eating healthy until I started reading the labels on the pre-made food. The Dr. said I have high blood pressure, and if I could just lose 10 pounds, I probably could go off the medicine (I just started the medicine and I am 45). That was a wake up call for me. I came home and looked at all the labels on the food I was eating and feeding my family. I couldn't believe the amount of sugar in the food!! The American Heart Association recommends 21-24 grams of sugar per day for women. Juice is my favorite drink. In one glass of juice, I was drinking between 24-40 grams of sugar in one glass!! And I would have up to 4 glasses a day!!! No wonder I was having trouble losing weight and now have high blood pressure!

Right after my Dr's appointment 2 weeks ago I came home and started limiting myself to 21g of sugar per day to see what would happen. I lost over 10 lbs in the 2 weeks - just by limiting the sugar! I went back to the Dr. to see if my blood pressure dropped too, and the top number dropped by 10 points, but the bottom number stayed the same (still in the high range). The Dr. wanted me to stay on the medicine and come back in 2 weeks to get my blood pressure checked again. I am trying so hard to get off this medication!

The first week was REALLY hard because I was craving the sugar so badly! I was very grumpy and my husband even noticed I wasn't pleasant to be around (my body felt like it was coming off a drug). Now that I am living in my 3rd week off sugar - I am not craving it anywhere close as I was before. My mood has stabilized. I am noticing wonderful changes in my body (like my teeth feel cleaner before I brush them).

I would much rather spend my $$ on healthy eating instead of medication because I can't stop eating cookies from the supermarket bakery! Now the only food I put in my mouth is food I make myself from scratch or pre-made food where I can read all the ingredients and know exactly what they are.

Thanks again for encouraging your readers on a healthy lifestyle! I was really glad to see this post today as it gave me the shot in the arm I needed to keep going on my lifestyle change in my eating habits.

Wonderful, Lynette. Come to find out, it is sugar that is the main culprit in destroying health! It is also so addictive so if you can give it up completely, that is the very best way to be healthy.
This post came at a good time, as I have been trying to loose a few pounds and nothing was working. I am planning on starting no sugar for a month and see what happens and how I feel. I am also making it a point to exercise more. I know it will be hard the first few weeks as my body will WANT the sugar. It is so hard to eat healthy unless you make a point and commitment to do so. I was just praying this morning for God to give me the self-control that I am so going to need during this month.

I haven't eaten sugar or anything sweetened except with stevia for a very long time and you do lose your sweet tooth. I eat baked yams every day that satisfy a sweet tooth. Bake them for a long time so they get soft and syrupy! Good luck, Sarah. You can do it since Christ lives within you!
Thank you for this post (and the one you linked to about building up our immune systems!) We have had a ROUGH winter at our house. I have had to be on antibiotics 3 times since having my baby - one for an infection in labor, one for strep throat, and just barely finished one for a UTI. I'm SO upset by this, I have never been on antibiotics in my life and suddenly I've needed them so often. I am taking probiotics to try to combat the antibiotics, but I'm still worried. My weight is fine but I know I need to improve my health!

Read this post, Tiffany ~ http://www.lorialexander.blogspot.com/2015/01/my-...

Antibiotics simply weaken your immune system. A healthy immune system is able to fight the majority of infections without side effects. Right before my first brain surgery, a doctor had put me on an antibiotic because I had gotten an infection in the hospital. My neurosurgeon told me to get off of it right away and he was extremely upset with the other doctor. He said I needed my immune system as strong as possible before brain surgery, not weakened by antibiotics.
Yes looks like I need to beef up my immune system. I'm trying. Hopefully I can recover from it! I'm ordering the clear tract....I wonder if the capsules work as well? I found some on Amazon. I am taking cranberry supplements but they probably don't work as well. Thanks Lori. :)
As far as UTI's go, I use to keep them constantly. The doctor would prescribe antibiotics, and even told me if it continued she wanted me to see a specialist. Then someone told me about apple cider vinegar with the mother. I add a small amount to my water every once in a while, and I haven't seen a doctor in nearly 5 years. It really works. So simple!
Building the immune system is a myth that is widely believed, but has absolutely no evidence and is actually counter to what we know of how the immune system works. Your immune system works at maximum capacity unless you are seriously deficient in necessary nutrients or sleep-deprived or immunocompromised. You can't "build" the immune system by eating certain foods or taking certain supplements. You can make sure you aren't sleep deprived or nutrient deficient to prevent shortages from slowing down the immune response, but that's about all.

The immune system is a wonderful thing, but it isn't able to stop every disease before you get sick, no matter how healthy you eat or how many supplements you take. It usually wins in the end because it is a wonderful system, but it takes time for your body to recognize, prepare, and attack an invader and this period of time is why you get sick.

Antibiotics don't hurt your immune system, but disease can. When your body is actively fighting an infection, resources are less available for other things, including fighting any new invaders. That is why viral infections so often lead to secondary infections as the body's resources are stretched thinner in fighting the virus. Thus, antibiotics, which can help the immune system by killing bacteria, actually help prevent the immune system from being strained so much. Taking antibiotics without reason isn't good because they can deplete good bacteria in the gut and lead to digestive issues and they can trigger allergic reactions in some people. But when you have an active bacterial infection, an antibiotic can help your immune system and get you back to health much faster. And they have also saved many, many lives as well.

Hi Lori,
thankyou for this post. My husband and I were trying to go off sugar, grains and most carbs. We did pretty well. But lately we have caved and all of a sudden we have developed colds and horrid temps. Something we didnt get when we were off the sugar etc. The only sugar im having now is in a manuka honey and lemon tea.

I also heard the only 'good' stevia is green. Not white. As the white is too processed.

I would imagine the white is heavily processed. We buy the liquid kind from NOW. Yes, sugar definitely weakens the immune system! Manuka honey is amazing! I use it to heal all sorts of things.
Whilst I eat healthy meals, I occasionally eat a chocolate bar or chips because I enjoy them. We still eat sugar in cakes and muffins that I make as I don't like stevia and other alternatives and only yesterday we all enjoyed a delicious homemade cheesecake for morning tea. Whilst food should be about maintaining a healthy body, I also believe it should be enjoyable and fun and treats every now again are just fine. So far I have very good health and weight with the way I eat. All things in moderation.
I think we can all always use these reminders. I feel health/exercise is one of the great problems each modern person must solve. Most people struggle with this to some degree. Obviously some more than others.
