Gestational Diabetes and Soda

Yes, the title is a funny combination of words but just stick with me! I have enjoyed watching the Willis Family on TLC. They are a godly family with 12 children who sing and do a whole lot more. During Tuesday's episode, the mother shared that one of her babies was 12 1/2 pounds! She had trouble getting her daughter out of the birth canal and her daughter has permanent shoulder damage because of it. The mother said that after her daughter's birth, she researched gestational diabetes, which causes abnormally large babies, and decided to change her diet after this difficult pregnancy and birth.

The family goes on tours around USA to sing and perform. During one stop, they had pizza to celebrate their oldest son's birthday. I noticed they were all drinking water. What, no soda with pizza? That's like watching baseball with no peanuts! Right? Wrong. Soda is poison to the human body. Maybe they have decided they will not be a soda drinking family after her bout with gestational diabetes since they were all drinking water. {Just a guess!} I never bought my children soda while I was raising them. I knew the ingredients and they were not fit for human consumption. {Fresh lemonade is MUCH better tasting and good for you, as a healthy alternative!}

Here is an article that explains eight ways soda affects your health negatively. Yes, it tastes good if you like sugary sweet drinks, but we need to learn to cater to the health of our body instead of our taste buds. Everything you put into your body is either nourishing it or destroying it. Every cell and tissue is made up from what we consume; it doesn't just go in one end and come out the other. We are the temple of the living God and we need to treat it as such in everything we do. Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God {1 Corinthians 10:31}. Don't live to satisfy the flesh and give into its desires but do everything for God's glory. Stop supporting the makers of junk food that are destroying the health of many and support those who are working hard to make food that nourishes our body and gives us good health.

"Start children early on knowing that cookies, ice cream, candy and cake are not healthful food and are not synonymous with love, their birthday, holidays, or parties. Teaching them to avoid bad habits is a better love. You can start them on the habit of not routinely putting harmful things in their body. Remember, that automobile coolant tastes sweet, but it is not good for you. You can teach a similar concept about sweet tasting junk food, soda, and harmful drugs to children and yourself." {Joli Bookspan}

I remember reading the journals of a mother who had nine children. She observed that her first few children were small but during her last few pregnancies, she developed gestational diabetes and her babies were very large which made delivery extremely difficult. She even needed a c-section with one because the baby was so large. After studying the cause, she too came to the conclusion that it was her diet and radically changed her family's eating habits. {You can read the archives of all her journals on the link I provided. If you want to read some godly wisdom from a mother who is raising children who've grown up walking with Jesus, I encourage you to read them. It is time well spent!}

We are responsible for our health and the health of our family. We are the ones who do the shopping and preparation of the food they eat. Yes, it takes time but it is worth it. If you are young and want to have children, eat as healthy as possible to make your body prepared to house the creating of a baby.  Don't take drugs to cure your sicknesses, if you can help it. Search for healthy alternatives that boost the immune system since it is what keeps a body healthy and fights off disease. God created the amazing human body with an incredible ability to heal itself of many diseases. Learn how it works best and take care of it. "Many people turn to vitamins, supplements, drinks with stimulant compounds, and various medicines, both over-the-counter and prescription, hoping these will fix their low energy or poor health, without ever looking at the unhealthy daily eating habits behind their problems."

Do you not know that you are a temple of God
 and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
1 Corinthians 3:16

Thankfully Millennials are drinking far less soda than other generations. I know in Appalachia we have a problem with people using high caffeinated and highly sweet drinks as antidepressants though. It is decaying teeth of people who can often not afford dental care.

That is sad. I see pictures of those in poverty drinking soda instead of spending the little money they have on nourishing food. It's cheap and widely available, unfortunately.
When I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes that was the one thing I was able to quit cold turkey. I stopped drinking soda, even diet. I agree...pizza without rootbeer is a killer. And every so often....rarely, I will get a diet rootbeer (no better than the sugar filled ones) to enjoy with my pizza. We are water drinkers. My 5 year old son drinks water exclusively here at home and when he has options he only ocassionaly chooses an ice tea or chocolate milk.
I used to attend indoor park with a woman who was quite large. She had two children and was pregnant with her third and hated water. She always had an iced coffee or soda in her hand. She is now going through a lot of health problems carrying her fourth baby and has had to give all that up. Our diets catch up with us...the good, and the bad.

Yes, we do reap what we sow in every area of our lives, Desiree. Fake food = Fake health!
I love watching the Willis family too! I had gestational diabetes with my son. He was a couple days over and only 7 lbs 7 ounces. I really, really watched what I ate though. If not you will get a 12 pound baby! If I had soda, while pregnant, it was diet. I tried to stick with a lot of water and tea, because you can go with stevia or honey. My cousin's kids drank a lot of soda and she cut it out all together and she swears that they are totally different kids! They a lot better behaved. I can believe that soda affects you a lot.

I've known people who put sodas in their baby's bottle! Many don't know how harmful it is or simply don't care.

I used to drink lots of soda before I became Broodmother. Diet soda to be precise since "sugar is bad!" was slammed into my head as a child. I know from personal experience how awful artificial sweeteners are and frankly "diet" and "low-fat" products do more harm than good, especially if one is trying to lose weight. I lost a mass amount of weight when I started eating “one-ingredient” foods as opposed to “low-fat/low-cal/diet” packaged nonsense. My own personal rule now when it comes to buying pre-packaged foods is if I can't pronounce the ingredients, I don't eat it and I sure as heck don't feed it to my family.

In regards to the italicized quote by Dr. Jolie Bookspan, I respectfully disagree with the approach outlined. The human body requires a moderate level of sugar and even fat to remain healthy hence when I teach healthy eating to my kids, I teach them about the various nutrients and what foods do what for our bodies. I teach them by example, I teach them "everything in moderation, nothing to excess". I teach them to understand where their food comes from and to respect the animals and plants that fill our bellies. I teach them that healthy eating is more about balance and less about “don’t eat that, don’t eat this”. After all, how well did being told not to eat something work for Eve?...

As for the view on junk, I love to cook and bake so there's always something on the stove or in the oven. I don't shy away from making my family desserts. My daughter has a sweet tooth, my son doesn't. His favorite kind of cake is carrot however my daughter is a chocolate addict like me so anything goes if there's chocolate involved. My kids also drink water or milk - no fruit juice, no pop. We're also a family who loves our ice cream. My kids and I make ice cream together the fun way. : ) We have one of those ice cream balls and we've tried to make ice cream with two plastic baggies after we saw it on Cutthroat Kitchen. It allows the kids to come up with their own flavors (I'm still surprised at how tasty carrot 'n' orange ice cream was) and most of them contain a fruit or vegetable. Avocado 'n' Lime is my favorite ice cream flavor ever.
https://youtu.be/PI7FkBoDxx4 Check this link out. We rarely have soda anymore. My children freely drink water or raw milk. Occasionally they have juice or flavoured milk. But usually only for birthdays. :-) a film worth seeing is 'that sugar film'.
Very good post, thank you, Lori! I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes during my second trimester with my last baby. Although I have never been a soda drinker, I was getting too much sugar from other sources. I really overhauled my diet and learned to read labels, watching for how many grams of sugar are in each food. I thought my instant oatmeal and yogurt were healthy choices until I read the labels! I ate much, much cleaner after that, and my daughter was a healthy 8 pounds when she was born. I kept up my eating habits and my weight returned to normal pretty quickly after she was born. My kids have always liked fruits and vegetables and I was often asked how I got my kids to eat vegetables with their meals. I believe it was the modeling that they saw. They wanted what they saw us eating. They view cake or ice cream as a treat and I notice they rarely finish these items when they are at a friend's party or other gathering. They just never developed a taste for it. I'd rather they never have a taste for it instead of battling it they way I have!
Great article Thanks for sharing.

Not only Soda can cause Diabetes but also can affect bones and consequently our teeth. And the list of danger goes on and on.

Personally i stopped drinking soda a long time ago, and i hope that every body does !

Thanks again Lori Alexander

Cheers.
