My New KJV Journaling Bible

Over ten years ago, Ken and I attended a week long conference that the Pearls put on about fifteen minutes from us. Ken was only going to go the first night but he enjoyed listening to Michael so much that he attended the whole week with me! Michael taught the book of Hebrews. We went because I had recently read Created to Be His Help Meet by Debi Pearl and loved it so I wanted to meet them in person!

It was a wonderful week. It actually changed our lives. We learned about our new lives in Christ and our marriage has been transformed. We had the privilege of meeting both of them and even some of their joyful children. Debi had a session for just women about the subject matter in her book which I loved. On Sunday, they had a church service and my whole family attended and enjoyed it. When it was over, we were some of the last to leave and Ken found a KJV Bible that someone had left. Michael Pearl believes we should only be reading KJV since it is the most accurate. I have grown to love this version but I do read an easier version for the Old Testament. I just can't understand it in the KJV.

No one claimed the Bible Ken had found so Ken gave it to me. It had no name in it. It was fairly worn and I have used this Bible for years. I listened to every single tape Michael came out that was teaching a new book in the Bible and took judicious notes in my Bible writing in every single space I could find. These notes have come in SO handy whenever I want to teach women the Bible! Well, this Bible is completely falling apart. The binder has come apart and I just love this Bible! Here is a picture of one page in it. You can see how marked up it is. I also highlight like crazy.

The other day, I saw this Journaling KJV Bible and I ordered it. I am going to transfer ALL of my notes, which are getting harder and harder for me to see as they begin to fade and my eyes are not as strong as they once were. I even have to use a magnifying glass to see some of my notes! Yes, it's going to take me a long time, but that's okay. I will LOVE having all of my notes clearly spelled out in this new Bible with the wide margins so I can read them better!

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12

Just like the authors of each book in the scriptures were, though mear men, inspired by God it is evident that the translators of 1611 were also inspired. Praise God we have it in such a format!

And as a side note: I have always viewed the Pearls as a litmus test for a baby Christian vs a spiritually mature one. It is almost comical how some bristle at their straight-forwardness.

Michael is my favorite Bible teacher! I love his stories; they're riveting. I know he spends hours every day studying his Bible. I also listen to John MacArthur, David Jeremiah, and Chuck Swindoll. I was just mentioning to Ken that all my favorite Bible teachers are old men. This made me sad but he assured me that God is capable of raising men just like them!

How do you personally reconcile the differences in each of these teacher's teachings? It's not like they differ on the minor details (i.e. to tithe or not). The teachings between these guys in some heavy doctrinal areas are polar opposites. One teaching might even view the other teaching as heretical.
I don't agree with any of them 100%. Each person needs to listen or read what a preacher or teacher teaches and needs to go to their Bible and search out the answers for themselves like the Bereans. "These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so." {Acts 17:11}

I was hoping for more specifics. For example in an earlier post you bemoaned churches that constantly harp on the current state of being a sinner and noted that you can't see how someone would want to be part of a church like that. Well I would put, MacArthur, Jeremiah, and Swindoll in that category.

So knowing that you don't care for churches like that, how do you listen to their teachings? Do you listen up to a certain point?.....fast forward through parts that you don't agree with?.........listen but don't take to heart the subject matter?

The purpose in me asking is because I personally couldn't listen to anyone whom I have fundamental disagreements with on doctrine.
This is a great question that Rajun poses; effectively ‘at what point do we not endorse a teacher any longer.’ I have done that with several teachers and made my feelings known to others. However, I don’t pretend to know the one-size-fits-all answer or be able to explain it well if I do know it but will throw in some thoughts: we are to strive toward unity and overlook smaller [Ooo, need to define that] differences but scripture is also clear that we distance ourselves from those that repeatedly blasphemy the Word by mouth or action.
I would agree with Lori that I think all those she mentions have at least some material good qualities but by one example that comes to mind I believe MacArthur is at odds with scripture on divorce. But for perspective, I was shocked to read my own father’s original beliefs on divorce as he was a pastor for 25 years and even married off his own daughter to a divorced man. Yet I know of no man more desirous of God and His righteousness who never stopped growing in maturity. All man and even teachers are fallible and under pressure by the circumstances and thus the very reason for Act 17:11 so that we can use scripture for ‘reproof’ of our own minds and of others. We are to ‘sharpen’ each other – each household must determine the stance they must take, bearing in mind the need for unity in the greater church. There is a season to favor unity even when we know something is wrong and a season to press the issue no matter the turmoil that results.
Hi Lori,
I use this version: http://www.amazon.com/Holy-Bible-Version-Personal...
My husband picked it out and I love it! He also loves Michael Pearls teaching and says it has revolutionised the way he studies his bible.

It's revolutionized the way I understand the Bible! I all makes so much more sense to me now; the difference between the Law, the Gospels {many of the things Jesus was addressing were directed to the Jews who were living under the Law} and the New Covenant. Thanks for the link!
Hi Lori
The journaling bible is a great idea rather than having a notebook, keeps the notes together in the right place. I am very tempted but am also getting the Macarthur Study Bible as a birthday present DV!. So many options.
by the way, yes, I listen to the same bible teachers, the old men as you call them!
Blessings

I was able to get my grandmother's old Bible (KJV). It has notes written in it and on slips of papers throughout it. I am so pleased to have this to read and pass down.
