Tired Of Acting Happy

She was angry when I read this ~ "And I may be called to walk through this world with a bright, smiling face while my heart is breaking."

She was tired of acting happy when she felt so miserable all the time.  She has been through a lot of family and health problems.  However, I told her that whenever I think about her, I think of her as a happy and friendly person.  Jesus shines through her pain.

It got me to thinking...Our joy and happiness shouldn't be dependent upon our circumstances.  Just watch the news for awhile and you will lose your joy and happiness.  Pain and suffering are all around us.  Everyone you meet has been through trials.  It is inescapable.

This is why I love these verses ~

If you then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sits on the right hand of God.  Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.  For you are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.  When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall you also appear with Him in glory.
Colossians 3:1-4

If we expect our circumstances to make us happy, we will not be happy that often.  We have to keep our eyes on things above and all His wonderful promises...He is in control, He works all things out for our good, He directs our paths, He has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His dear Son, delivered us from the wrath to come ...

Renew your mind with God's truth and then you will have something to smile about! :)

What a wonderful reminder to keep our eyes (and heart) fixed on the ONE source of true joy. With Christ, we can have and experience joy "even though" and "in the midst of".

Beautiful words to start my week-
~Stacy
Amen!! Great word for a new week. Thanks for sharing!
what a challenging post.
good thoughts.

The people I know who most embody Christ and Christlike behavior aren't particularly happy-happy-smiley. They are people who breathe peace. Even when they're embroiled in extremely stressful circumstances. Some of it is personality. Some of it is learned. Joy is different from happiness, and can be felt even in the midst of great sorrow.
So true! We need to elevate our eyes and faith above our circumstances. As you said, if our happiness depends on our circumstances (or another person, for that matter) then we won't be happy all that often!

Yes, I must remember to look up when the circumstances are pulling me under!

May daughter and I are re-memorizing Colossians 3:1-3 this week so I was instantly reminded of that when I saw your scriptures quoted.

I so want to not be as dependent upon my circumstances choosing my mood. I'm not there yet but still working.
this is RICH.

wow. i need to dwell on this today.
Good post. I'm all about being happy in whatever our circumstances. Happiness is a choice. There are those that minimize the importance of happiness by saying we should seek joy. Our joy is in the Lord. Sure it is, but happiness is what we can show our fellow man. :)
I needed to hear this. I don't like hearing it, but I need to! I am fighting my way through some tough stuff and I'm finding that there really, really is joy in the midst of pain and heartache.
nice...grood stuff...circumstances will rarely make us happy...so it is important what we choose to keep our eyes on...
how i needed this, this week. thank you lori. you bless me.
Very good food for thought.
I have definitely had to choose joy and choose to smile today, but it is a choice and does go beyond my present circumstances.

I'm glad to have come to your blog! =)
Wonderful post and just what my husband and I were just talking about. Even though I may feel I have been walking in the wilderness I have to keep my eye set on God and my mind renewed daily with His word. Why shouldn't we expect the best to come, we are the sons and daughters of the King of kings!
Amen.
Beautiful thoughts! Thanks for joining our "Living for Joy" challenge this week!
