Cyber Knife Treatment

Cyber Knife is the treatment we have chosen.  Proton Therapy would take six weeks of treatment, five days a week, two hours away, and would kill my pituitary.  Cyber Knife is five treatments, fifteen minutes away, and probably will kill the pituitary.  This was an easy choice for us.

I will begin in a week or so.  They will first take an MRI and Cat Scan, then overlay them to map out the tumor.  I will lay on the contraption above.  They will give my hundreds of beams of radiation targeting the tumor. Each individual beam can do no harm but where they all meet is where they are effective in controlling the tumor.  It won't even shrink the tumor, just hopefully keep it from growing for many years.

There is an 80% success rate for ten years.  It is close to my optic nerve and hugging my pituitary so I am asking for prayers to protect both.  They are going to give lower doses of radiation at the top of the tumor to protect the optic nerve but hopefully stop the tumor.

My endocrinologist will take my blood to get a baseline of all my hormones and watch my levels after treatment.  An opthamologist will give me an eye exam so she can watch how treatment will affect my vision.

So there you have it.  Your prayers are very much appreciated.  It is amazing what medicine can do today.  God is a God of miracles so I am asking Him for a hedge of protection around my optic nerve and pituitary.  He can do abundantly more than we can imagine!

So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away,
our inner self is being renewed day by day.
For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us
an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison,
as we look not to the things that are seen
but to the things that are unseen.
For the things that are seen are transient,
but the things that are unseen are eternal.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Oh dear sister! I can't even wrap my mind around these treatments! How blessed we are to have these options open to us! May God protect your eyesight and pituitary through this all! My prayers for you continue. The verse you have closed with says so much about your attitude and hope and complete trust in God! How can I help but love you?
Will be praying that God will give you much peace though this, that the treatment would be successful with no ill effects.
I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken Psalm 16:8
Praying for protection for your eyesight and praying for doctor's precision in killing those tumor cells.
I hope this in no way sounds insensitive, but I'm curious if your doctor played video games as a kid. I wish I could ask a doctor like this if he (assuming it's a he) believes honing video game skills is beneficial for future careers like this where you are using such precision machinery. Or if he spent his time maybe learning a musical instrument or something? I'm just curious if any childhood games prepared him for such a career or if it is something he took an interest in in his young adulthood. Sorry, I know this has nothing to do with your very serious and pressing upcoming treatment. It's just a question I've often wondered about.

The Radiologist maps out the target tumor with a Neurosurgeon in 3 D, and it is a Physicist who then targets the radiation with the machine. There is little or no moment to this game, just precision as to planning as the machine has built into it all the necessary mechanisms to accurately target cells to less than 1/10th of a millimeter.

There generally is no winner or loser as the radiation hits it spot with the right dosages, but how the body responds to the radiation, and the delicate structures around Lori's tumor, make the potential side affects not ideal.
oh I see. It's all in how her body responds to all of it. Thank you for explaining that.
I don't know your family personally but I just want to give each of you: Lori, you, your daughters and sons a big hug. I really like all of you and the stress of what you're going through is quite palpable to me.
I couldn't have said it better than the first Kathy. The only thing I can do, and I will, is add to her prayers. You are a shining example for us all. To be honest, I'm not so sure that if I were in your shoes that I wouldn't be asking God to not use me for and example of faith in Him. Just saying this is tuff stuff. Love and prayers your way. Keep us up to date with the progress please.
You are such a strong woman of God....indeed a blessing to me. Praying for protection for you and no future tumor growth. 80% success rate according to man.....like you said, God can do far more then we could ever think or imagine! Love to you~~angela

93% 10+ year control rate... but only God knows how the pituitary will do as it is right beside it.

Agreeing in prayer with your requests Lori, & also asking the Father to give you the "peace that passes understanding" through this. I'm a little familiar with that peace...it is amazing! The Father loves you & will be with you, holding your hand through all of it. Love & prayers, in Jesus, Cynthia
My prayers are with you and your family! You are such an inspiration to us!
Praying for you!!! Prov. 3:5-6
Praying for you and wishing you all the very best!
My grandma had a rare and aggressive type of cancer when she passed almost 10 years ago. The surgery she was scheduled to have that would have likely saved her life was cancelled when her doctor found out that the cancer was in such a place that the surgery would cause her more harm than good.

About a year after she passed, CyberKnife had come out as a treatment in our area and would have been able to give her a successful surgery. I cried for months after I found this out and my Mom was kind to point out that God had a reason for the surgery technique to come out when it did. She said that maybe I shouldn't trust what I felt; although my grandma couldn't benefit from it, thousands of other people would and maybe one day I'd know someone who could benefit and I'd be glad they could.

She was right. I don't know you personally, but you're a source of godly inspiration to me and I'm glad that you get to have this procedure! 93% control rate is awesome. :-)

I echo ayearinskirt's sentiments in hoping that my story didn't seem insensitive during this time of stress for you and your family. I am praying for wisdom and guidance for the doctors, you and your family. I also pray that God will show off in a huge way; you know, the way that defies every medical and scientific explanation that man has! ;-)
Praying, praying for you!!
I will be praying for you Lori. Stay strong!! God Bless!
Praying for you as you keep trusting in the Lord Jesus! One day at a time!
