Wear It Or Share It

America is a nation of hoarders. We even have a television show about it.  Does anyone even need this MANY clothes??? Throughout the Old Testament, when God's people were walking in obedience to Him, He would bless them with food, clothing, silver, gold, etc.  After awhile, they would forget about God and begin to worship idols. Then He would punish them or allow the consequences of their sin to destroy them.

We, in America, have so much. We have forgotten God and turned to our idols instead. I remember reading that in hundreds of years, if the Lord tarries, when they unearth America and find black boxes {televisions} in every home, they will think these black boxes must have been our idols. {iPhones may be considered an idol, also.}

Prosperity leads us to forget God and depend upon our wealth and things instead of upon God. Suffering and tribulation brings us back to Him. A great way to not rely too heavily upon our things is to give them away and live your life with open hands.

We all have too many clothes and too much stuff. How many clothes in your closet do you really wear? If you haven't worn it in a year, it would be good to give it away and let someone else wear it. If you are keeping clothes you never wear, you are hoarding them and hoarding is not a good thing.

Consistently be going through the stuff in your home and if you have extras or are not using things, give them away. There are many people who could use the stuff you are not using or hoarding. We do not need to hoard and be afraid of the future. We must learn to depend upon God and His provision.

So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?'
or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?'
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness,
and all these things will be given to you as well.
Matthew 6:31, 33

I've started with taking things out of our closets we haven't worn in a long while, or the kids have outgrown, and making them into rag rugs, quilt pieces for a scrappy quilt, etc. The thrift stores here are so overflowing in clothing they can hardly contain it all, so why not make them useful for the home?
I completely agree!! Some friends and I were talking about this a couple of years ago and we organized our church's first "Love Your Neighbor Rummage." We set it up like a rummage sale and when each person came in they were given a paper to read before they shopped. It explained that God's love is free to everyone, and so everything at the rummage would be free as well! We also served a free pancake breakfast. We refused to take $ donations and asked that they instead use the money to pay if forward to a neighbor or friend. The first year we did it was SO FUN because no one coming through the doors knew what to expect. The shocked faces were priceless!

I have a little table near the road with a free sign on it & every time I clean or sort things, I put stuff out there. My neighbors take nearly everything & I haven't had one complaint about my tacky little table, ( I painted it pink! ) Easy! Love & prayers, in Jesus, Cynthia
I love this post, and I so agree. It's so easy to become slaves to our STUFF. My mom was raised in extreme poverty, so to this day she still hangs on to way too much. She has a clean/organized home so you wouldn't know it, but she has so many things. I think she is still hurting from her poor childhood and feels the need to overcompensate by having a lot. But being raised by her, has made me the opposite, ha ha! I can almost consider myself a minimalist in some aspects. I have 2 pairs of pants, 6 shirts, and 3 dresses for church. And only a few pairs of shoes. It is freeing to not have so much, and it makes life easier to manage.
I have trouble keeping house. I decided to ruthlessly declutter this year. It is a lot easier to keep house without a lot of "stuff". :)
I quite often get to the end of a season and go through my cupboard and see what was wore and what wasn't (and why) - I have a bag ready to take to charity at the moment. I don't like clutter and this is a great way to de-clutter on a regular basis. It keeps the house manageable. I also off-load things to my sons for their homes, especially in the kitchen (dried food I haven't used all the way through to kitchen containers and appliances) . Likewise I often look through second-hand stores to see what I can find - a great way to recycle goods.
I definitely have clothes in my closet I'm not wearing - either the item is too small or doesn't fit well, but for some reason I just hang on to it! Thanks for this motivational post to go through our clothes and get rid of unnecessary items.

Blessings,
