Healing IBS Caused by Fructose Malabsorption

When I was thirty years old and shortly after I had my fourth baby, I became very sick. My gut hurt constantly, I was naseous and had diarrhea. For two years, I went to multiple doctors to figure out why. I even went to UCLA and USD and both Infectious Disease Specialists looked at me and said I looked like I had come out of a concentration camp. I needed to go home and eat since it was all in my head.

Shortly afterwards, I had a horrible night of no sleep, pain and diarrhea. Ken took me to a family practice doctor around the corner from my home. He asked me if I'd ever been told to have a stool test. I told him no. He gave me a kit and I went home. I thought, "I'm not going to take a stool test. What would that accomplish?" However, that night, I was very ill again so I took the test. It came back that I was FULL of parasites.

My Dad is a pathologists. I had ten parasites per oil field. Most people only have two to three. My Dad called well-known Infectious Disease Specialists around the nation for my treatment and they all told him they had never heard of someone having so many!

I was put on strong drugs for several years. The parasites were very difficult to get rid of. We have no idea how I got them since I never did travel to foreign countries. I have heard that many people in America have parasites. It is not that abnormal. All of these strong drugs just made my gut worse. Therefore, my gut has been bad since I was 30 years old. Going through two brain surgeries and a neck fusion didn't help.

I have a good friend that I have known for many years who has struggled with health issues also. About three months ago she called me and told me she is finally well and feels better than she has in years! She told me she thinks I have fructose malabsorption. She encouraged me to get off of all fruit and even some vegetables with high fructose. She also said I should take Symbiotic Colostrum and probiotics every day. Within a few days, I no longer had diarrhea! I started gaining weight and I have enjoyed life finally after 30 years of suffering with IBS!

My diet is very simple and I will tell you exactly what I eat for those of you who have struggled with IBS or gut problems for many years and can't get well. Right when I wake up, I take colostrum and probiotic. Then I fix a cup or two of my homemade chicken broth with sea salt. For breakfast, I cook chopped up butternut squash in Ghee. Then I eat two pastured eggs on top of it with Real Salt. For lunch, I have a large yam with Kerrygold butter on it and some organic roasted chicken. For dinner, it's steamed swiss chard, zucchini and some fish. For my snacks, I munch on a half of a cup of properly prepared organic cashews throughout the day. {I need extra calories!} I use fresh parsley, lemon and cilantro to season my food.

Yes, it's a very strict diet but it is worth it to finally feel good. I believe that after awhile I will slowly be able to add foods back to my diet but I must give my gut plenty of time to heal. It's kind of like an added freedom to my life to not spend much time thinking about food and living for food since my food is not that exciting!

Thank you so much for sharing this! I am also working on my gut and I am interested in the colostrum that you took. Is there a reason that you chose this brand? Also what is the brand of the probiotic that you took? Also, your remedies post recently helped a friend of mine who had a uti. Thank you for your helpful posts!

My friend recommended this Colostrum since it is from grass-fed cows. It is suppose to help not get colds, flu, etc. by boosting the immune system just as mother's milk does this for babies. The probiotics is made by Prescript-Assist broad spectrum probiotic and prebiotic. Here's the link ~ http://www.amazon.com/Prescript-Assist-Spectrum-P...

Glad these posts help, Kristie! They sure have helped me!
In 1997 i was diagnosed with Ulcerative collitis. I was very ill. I was a point where even water was giving me diarrhea. It was horrible. I was 27. My diet growing up was terrible. I could drink a case of coke a week, ate white bread, margarine etc. Wasn't good!!! I saw a gastro doctor and he wanted to do surgery and i would have had a colostomy bag for the rest of my life. That was the first time instead if surgery i decided to explore alternatives. I saw a homeo path and started a new regiment. Over the next year or so i began to heal my gut with diet changes and good supplements. Today i would consider 100% better than i was then.

My doctor has me on asacol an pretnizone which did absolutely nothing for me, except bloat me into the stay puff marshmallow man!!

And also i found out it wasn't alcerative collitis it was chron's

So all i want to say it is we are what we eat!!
Use a car as an example. Would we put used or dirty oil in our car and expect it to run good. We need to look after what goes in our mouth. I believe with everything i know that ALL diseases start in the gut. So especially when it comes to our kids we have to be careful what we feed them and what goes in their mouth.
Because my childhood was like this for years
My lunch for school everyday
Peanut butter on white with margarine
Can of coke
Joe Louis (man those tastes so good) lol
Thats what i ate from prob grade 3 through high school because i didn't know any better!!

Just thought i would share this to let anyone know who maybe suffering similar to Lori's story or mine that with a change of diet, and proper supplements, and rest that you can heal your gut!! Wish i was a Christian back then so i could have added a healthy dose of prayer as well!!!!

My mom was diagnosed with colitis, Rob, when I was 5 years old. The doctors told her it was incurable. She refused to believe it so she went to a health retreat where she fasted on just water for 40 days and then lived on organic fruit and vegetable juices. She found out she couldn't eat dairy or meat for a long time or she would begin to bleed. It finally completely healed and she can almost eat anything now!
Thats where i am at now as well, without seeking and finding other options i would be living with a cb and most definately still sick. I am so fortunate to have had the courage back then NOT to have the surgery and seek an alternative. I have NO signs of ibs collitis or chron's for almost 17 years and like was saying even water for me sent me running to the washroom and bleed.
Oh my... I cannot imagine going through an ordeal like that, especially with four young children! I'm glad you were finally able to find a solution. It's scary hearing about people having parasites. My mom struggles with IBS and my older brother has Chrohn's Disease, so I'm considering sharing this article with them. I use the same ghee as shown in the picture on our roasted chicken, and in many recipes in place of butter, and really enjoy it. The chicken broth is good too, and it freezes well, so I'm glad I found those recipes here. Have a good weekend!

Thanks, Katie. I definitely think this diet would help someone with Crohn's disease also. My sister just got this book that she says is amazing for healing your gut. You have a good weekend also!
Great post and I find the Measles study so interesting! Thank you for sharing! Reassures me that we made the right decision in not giving our son the MMR.

You're welcome, Cori! We never immunized any of our children.
The GAPS DIET i hear is reccomendable as well. :-)
This makes me think of The Maker's Diet by Jordan Rubin -a book worth reading.
Hi Lori,

I have fructose malabsorption too. I have IBS for about 15 years of my life and would get really bad burning pains (not to mention all sorts of other IBS symptoms) especially after eating fruit. Fruit seemed to make my stomach hurt so incredibly bad, so on my own I started avoiding it. I was also lactose intolerant too. I even went to tons of specialists and nothing was found just labeled IBS. A few years ago I learned about fructose malabsorption and knew for sure that is what I have. I have been fructose free for so many years that I never went in to have the breath test (you can have it diagnosed with a breath test after consuming fructose), since I know it would just kill my stomach to consume fructose. Anyways, it has really helped, even though I still don't feel my gut is fully healed. I have to be very careful with what I eat. My diet consists of quinoa, meats like chicken, olive oil, fructose free vegetables. Even the things you mention eating aren't good if you have severe fructose malabsorption. Sweet potatoes and squash are very irritating to my stomach. It depends on how severe you have it. Everyone with it has different tolerance level.

A few other things you should avoid with fructose malabsorption- wheat (high in fructans) and be very careful with probiotic supplements. The ones with FOS in can make a person with fructose malabsorption very sick (I know from experience). FOS is considered a healthy prebiotic that is often in probiotics, but it makes those with fructose malabsorption very sick.

Check out info on FODMAPS diet. http://www.ibsdiets.org/fodmap-diet/fodmap-food-l...

Just a note with severe fructose malabsorption I still can't have any of the fruit on the low fructose list. Nor can I eat peas, corn, carrots (any sweet vegetables).

Lori, I am glad you shared this on your website. Not many people know about fructose malabsorption, but so many people have IBS, who could be helped alot!!!

Yes, I was told we need to experiment with what we can tolerate. I still have to be VERY careful or I get diarrhea but the pain is not nearly as bad as it use to be, praise God! I have heard it takes the gut many years to heal, especially if it has been sick for many years, but I do believe it can eventually heal.
Also, forgot to say thanks for posting the vaccination article.

Here is another one you might find interesting that I read today: Its called the 21 Curious Questions We're Never Allowed to Ask About Vaccinations

Thank you! I always love reading new articles about it. It's a shame that we can't trust the government of drug company's research since they have such an extreme bias towards vaccinating everyone.
I do not and have no touched fructose or any sugar for that matter for 13 years BECAUSE of my gut health!!! It works!
Thanks for this great info!
