A Safe Home is a Non-Toxic Home

Cancer is running rampant. Auto-immune diseases are sky-rocketing. No, we can't protect our families from all the falleness of this world, but we can certainly do our best and then leave the rest in God's hands. Our world is very polluted. Man is good at ruining what God created. However, there is so much good in the world also. We must keep our focus upon these things and make our homes as healthy as possible.

Many toxic chemicals cause cancer. It has been proven that we all have cancer cells in our body but a healthy immune system can keep the cancer cells from getting out of control. Another way is to try and prevent your family from being exposed to toxic chemicals. It has also been proven that the most toxic air is inside the home from all the toxic cleaning chemicals, furniture, carpet, etc. There is a lot we can do to make the air in our homes cleaner. Keep your windows open whenever the weather permits. Use non-toxic products for your home, organic food, safe hair care and body products, buying used things that have had time to air out, wood flooring or tile, and green plants around your home to clean up the air.

We must go back to the ways God created things to be, as much as possible. Use 100% cotton clothing. Eat food exactly the way He created it to be. Cows were meant to eat grass and hay, not grains. The same goes for chicken. Fish were meant to swim free in the ocean, not farm raised where they get all kinds of parasites and diseases. Pets are getting cancer now too from eating dead, processed food instead of food they were created to eat. Cats and dogs were meant to be meat eaters, not grain eaters.

Be more concerned with toxic chemicals over germs and viruses. A healthy body can fight most germs and viruses, but doesn't do as good of a job with toxic chemicals. I've never used any anti-bacterial soap! I don't use regular sunscreen since it is full of chemicals. I make my own deodorant. When my children were sick, I'd research natural ways to help their bodies heal, never depending upon drugs with all of their side effects.

Am I an environmentalist? Not if it includes saving eagles' eggs over saving unborn babies and preaching against having babies, I'm sure not! I do believe in caring for the creation the Lord has blessed us with, including our own bodies and doing what I can in my power and wisdom to keep them as unpolluted as possible!

For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
Romans 1:20

I'm so glad you are sharing all of this. This is very much the way I live, and then some. I try my best to get the word out also with the avenues I have. People have a hard time wanting to make the changes. I think many times they really listen, and may agree, but the "trouble" of doing life a different way seems like just too much work. It makes me sad. There have been times when I've had a many long conversations over all of these things, and that person seemed like they were really on board with me. They may try a few different things, only to go back to their previous lifestyle. When there are those who didn't make the changes and start to suffer the consequences they start to ask more questions. Not always, but many times they run to the doctor for all of the prescriptions and test to be done. All we can do is try, and I appreciate that you are trying. Blessings as always to you.

It is a whole lot easier to live this way if you were raised this way since old habits are hard to break. Yes, many are interested in becoming healthy once they begin to lose their health. Thanks, Kathy!
Amen! We need to be good stewards of the gifts God gave us on this earth. I feel great since eating more organically and cannot wait to start our flocks of free range chickens and ducks on our land this summer, along with a garden and fruit trees. Our grass fed beef tastes better to me than the antibiotic and hormone filled meat at the store. I do know it's more expensive, but so is getting sick and having to depend on costly doctor visits and prescriptions. I think it's great to try and incorporate it into your budget if you can, starting with what's most important to you. I really agree that it is worth it! You can get quite a bit of good, organic produce for th price of a pack of soda or bags of chips. Getting rid of the toxic cleaners and opening the windows alone has helped a lot. I also love using essential oils for cleaning and freshening the air. My headaches are gone and allergies have improved tremendously! Thank you for all your tips.

I think a lot of people could afford organic food if they cut some other things in their budget like processed, packaged food. For those who can't, I just encourage them to do the best they can!
Great post Lori! We can also join a food coop to save money too. I go to farmers markets in my area to support the local farms especially when i find out the organic farms and free range chickens, grass fed beef, etc.
I have been encouraging the young moms at church to get involved with clothes change where we help others save money by handing down baby clothes, maternity clothes to save money and are mostly made from cotton. I am so proud of many young moms who sacrifice to make their husbands money stretch so they can stay home and raise their children. Most of them cook from scratch, can their food from gardens, make their own diapers and clothes. It is so refreshing to read your post and know that there are many who do follow God's word and want to eat healthy and love their homes and families. We just don't hear about it on the news. Thanks so much for all you do.

You're welcome, Diane! It does take a full-time mother at home to accomplish most of the things you mentioned but it is worth it.
I love this post Lori (along with all your others. :D ) I always feel that as Christians we should be the healthiest, most in tune to creation people on earth. Sadly sometime it feels like the opposite.

Totally agree, Lori! Thanks for your encouraging posts. We are so rich and advanced, yet much of our food and products are chemical junk. I think many people don't even realize how bad it is for them. Soaps, for example, used to be great before WW2, but when money was low, companies began using all these cheaper chemical detergents. We've been stuck with them since. It's too bad.

Below is a list of the cleanest and the most contaminated fruits and veggies (at least in Canada. I'm sure it's different depending on where you live.) This has helped me to do a little better, and to still honour our budget. I try to only buy apples that are organic now, and I can buy non-organic kiwi and know that it's not the worst thing out there.

(Also, if anyone is looking for a pretty reasonably-priced, USDA-certified skin care brand, there's Bubble & Bee Organics. Sorry if this seems like advertising, but maybe this can bless someone.)

The Dirty Dozen (in order of contamination)
Apples
Celery
Sweet bell peppers
Peaches
Strawberries
Nectarines
Grapes
Spinach
Lettuce
Cucumbers
Blueberries
Potatoes

The Clean 15 (in order of least contamination)
Onions
Sweet Corn
Pineapples
Avocado
Cabbage
Sweet peas
Asparagus
Mangoes
Eggplant
Kiwi
Cantaloupe
Sweet potatoes
Grapefruit
Watermelon
Mushrooms

Thank you, ContentWife. It is good to know what we should buy organic. My sister was driving by strawberry fields near her home and the guys spraying were clothed in those white space-type suits with masks over their face. She decided then that she would never eat a strawberry that isn't organic!
This is so good to know, thank you for sharing the list!

You're very welcome. Glad it can help you too. :)
Well said...years ago when I started my urban homesteading blog I realised how many "green" people cry about saving whales and trees but are quite happy "killing" babies. It is often hard to sift through the green and Eco friendly minefields to get to what actually matters, but it can be done.

Agreed! We can definitely take good care of ALL of God's creation, especially children.
I use hairspray because I need hairspray. I am sure that there's unhealthy stuff in there. I wish there was a good alternative.

I could do better with this. I have to admit when someone gets a stomach bug or strep throat at our house, I go crazy sanitizing everything with Clorox. I really want to look into natural beauty products and toiletries. Thanks for sharing this today!

Try my all-purpose cleaner, instead Tiffany, with hyrogen peroxide and vinegar. Clorox is very toxic!
I love your blog and your encouragement, Lori! Thank you!! I have a sincere question about antibacterial treatment. Do your homemade cleaners kill germs? For instance, when I cook with raw chicken or meat of any kind, I feel I need an antibacterial soap for my hands after and a cleaner. What do you do in that case? And does your all purpose cleaner with peroxide and vinegar clean all those germs? Thanks in advance!!!

YES! Vinegar and hydrogen peroxide are great for killing germs. You can add in some tea tree oil, also, to make it even more powerful!
Great! And what do you use to wash your hands after dealing with raw meat? Can't wait to make my own cleaner! I have used my own detergent for years, but I'm getting to where I think the powder doesn't work as well. Think I'm going to try your liquid version! Do you or can you add anything for scent?
Ohh! This is a good post. It will really help my wife and it save our health. Good job! Keep posting.
I could improve this. I need to concede when somebody gets a stomach bug or strep throat at our home, I run insane sterilizing everything with Clorox.
