Homemade Liquid Hand and Dish Soap

The majority of hand and dish soaps have petrochemicals in them.  Petrochemicals are not made to be ingested by the human body.  When you wash dishes in them, I am sure some film from the soap stays on your dishes.  The best thing to do is to try and get most of the chemicals out of your life.  Toxic chemicals cause cancer.

Natural dish soaps from the health food store are expensive.  This is an alternative to store bought natural soaps that you can make yourself and it is very easy!  It doesn't produce suds {bubbles don't equal clean} and it's kind of runny but it will clean your hands and dishes just as well as the stuff in the stores.

Dissolve 1 Tablespoon of Washing Soda
in 2 cups of hot water.

Add 1/2 cup liquid Castile Soap
1 Tablespoon vinegar
1 Tablespoon glycerin
Few drops of Tea Tree Oil
or Lemon Essential oil which I LOVE!

Gently stir and pour into container.

You don't need any essential oils if you want it to be without any smell.  Tea tree oil is a good germ killer, however, but lemon essential oil smells wonderful! If your dishes are real greasy, add some baking soda to the water.

I may have to try this!I have all the ingredients, except the TTO. Just a quick question- does it wash off grease good? I've heard some homemade/all natural dishsoaps are good at cleaning, except for greasy/oily dishes.

I have heard you just put some baking soda in the sink if the dishes are real greasy to help fight through the grease. The washing soda helps with grease a lot, however.

try adding lemon juice, that helps cut the grease, but then you should use it up quickly
Great idea on reducing the chemicals we use daily! Visiting from Between Naps on the Porch.
Love the idea of all natural ingredients!
This sounds easy and effective - I will have to give it a try.
Is there one that works in the dishwasher or will this one suffice?

Just a clarification...everything is a chemical (remember the element chart?), . I think what is meant here is the fear of man-made chemicals, but in some instances these are to be preferred (ex: baking soda) over naturally-occuring compounds (ex: arsenic). One manmade substance that is worth avoiding is ethylene glycol--it is in many products--your liver will produce crystals when processing this stuff that will never go away. It's antifreeze-- poison. My hubby's a chemical engineer so he will tell me which products are truly worth avoiding and what's hype. He's not ever warned me about dishsoap, but it very well could have nasties worth avoiding. Something I'll try to look into.

I just think it's better to be clear that avoiding "chemicals" is an impossible task. Carcinogenic (natural or manmade) products we can and should avoid.
It's really nice information provided by you. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Is this for hand washing dishes only or can it be used in the dishwasher?

I just wanted to clarify about the washing soda. It isn’t supposed to be ingested so how can one be sure it’s safe to use in liquid dish washing and hand washing soap? I have younger children who are learning to wash their own dishes and I don’t know that they are always really good at rinsing.
