My Love Of Mason Jars

We use mason jars a lot. In fact, we don't need any Tupperware type containers since mason jars are so versatile, plus we have learned of the many dangers of storing food and drinks in any type of plastic.  I love how tight mason jars seal the food so it keeps fresh a lot longer.

These jars are great for safely storing my homemade chicken broth. I have a large mug of it every morning seasoned with sea salt since I know it is full of minerals that are good for bones, ligaments and digestive health. It may not sound too tasty but it is delicious, warm and soothing! It would be GREAT for children and for when anyone in your home is sick.  We use the mason jars to drink out of all the time.

The jar in the middle has fresh lemonade with the juice of one lemon and a bit of stevia to sweeten it up. We both have a big glass of this each day since lemon what is so alkalizing and cleansing. It tastes great also! You can use mason jars for hot and cold drinks.

I also use mason jars to store my homemade homemade kefir. We use it in our smoothies mostly. The other two jars are salted, soaked and dehydrated nuts that I make quite often since they are our favorite snack foods. I also salt, soak and dehydrate sunflower and pumpkin seeds. They are wonderful on salads. The soaking, salting and dehydrating makes nuts and seeds crunchy, easier to digest, and healthier.

You can also use them to store grains, flours, soups, etc. They are very inexpensive and last forever as long as you don't drop them. Most major supermarkets, Walmarts, and Targets carry them so they are easy to find. You can order the lids online when you need new ones. They look great lined up in a pantry!

Praise ye the Lord.  O give thanks unto the Lord;
for He is good: for his mercy endures forever.
Psalm 106:1

I use mason jars a lot, too. I drink my water every day out of recycled glass peanut butter jars. Using glass over plastic is preferable I believe. And your tea doesn't sound strange to me at all--I am the queen of 'weird concoctions'! :)
I too adore my mason jars!! I buy alot of mine at Goodwill and Thrift shops, they are generally in very good condition and I like vintage. I like the idea that they are "passed down" maybe from grandmothers. I also agree that they store food the best. We also drink from them and of course, I use them for canning. As you can see, I really enjoy them too!
Great post! I am going to go get some this weekend. I am uncomfortable using a lot of plastics but I wasn't sure of an alternative. My grandma used to use mason jars!
I have found the half gallon size at Michael's and use the 50% coupon for a real deal! They are great for storing all my bulk items in pantry size containers! The quart, pint, and half pints sizes are great for seasoning and flavoring mixes. Beside using new jars, I also use the ones that have been passed down from my grandma! Love those the most.
Great post. I have loved mason jars, it seems forever....especially the turquoise ones. I use the new and the old alike....love the idea that they have been passed down.
My lunches go to work in mason jars now. We've been overrun with them since I took up canning.
I to have been trying to avoid plastic containers and find Mason jars to be a fantastic substitute. I like all the sizes as well. I'll be looking around Michael's for the gallon size a poster mentioned.

I love Mason Jars also.....they are great!
Mason jars are the best!!
I too love mason jars, especially the old blue ones with the zinc lids!
I love them too! As you say, they're glass, not plastic, and they look so cute and folksy.
retro blue mason jars are on sale now at the big box store-I ran out and bought some. Love the blue color!
I never would have thought of the oil - can you taste it? They just had coffee with butter on the Today Show, maybe it's the same idea?
I have alot of old blue jars with zinc/ceramic inside lids. Do you thing the old lids are safe to use?
I saw somewhere online to put chopped up salad in a mason jar so it would keep longer. I have a large one and chopped up my lettuce, stuffed it in the jar and put it in the fridge. We take out what we want and it keeps for almost 2 weeks like that. No more brown lettuce in just a few days. I couldn't believe it made that much of a difference until I tried it. My husband won't drink out of anything else either.
We use them all of the time. I'm thinking about buying some 12 oz jars just for drinking.
